If they just showed up again later, people would complain about it being nothing but a callback to the last movie. If they showed up with some explanation, people would just complain that they did everything through exposition instead of showing it. If they showed everything in the same medium, people would complain that they were taking away from the main story.

Yes, i would. Either you write a plausible out for the character in the same movie or you keep them dead for good in the franchise. Everything else is a failure.
