The West never tried to cover up Soviet "genocide". In fact there's an egregious attempt to compare one out of many of a series of famines to the holocaust. They weren't trying to "divert" attention from anything. The U.S were in league with Ukrainian nationalist groups and Cold-War propagandists jumped at the concept of a man made famine.
