Why is Mars almost always presented as a militarist competitor to a lazy and corrupt Earth in sci-fi? Even in Star Trek its Mars that has all the shipyards.
You would think Martians would hold an more American pioneer spirit especially if they broke away from Earth control.
>planet named after war god
because Mars is the Roman god of war
Name thirteen flicks, five movies and one foreign kino where this actually happens.

Mars is a planet not a costume. This is NOT who I am, and this is NOT OKAY.

Why not the moon then
Or deep space
Significantly fewer resources, surface mobility, room for political dissension... resulting in a highly spartan, stoic, utilitarian lifestyle and mentality.

Because the moon and deep space don't have all the ingredients, man, you'll have to bring them from the planets which wastes the fuel you're saving in the first place.

The moon is too close to earth.
Its a literal satellite and if there was a lunar political state would be satellite to earth as well

>Even in Star Trek its Mars that has all the shipyards.
Mars's lower gravity (38% Earth's) makes it easier to get materials or completed starships from the surface of the planet into orbit. It's just a logistics issue.
