What is Cable for exactly? I'm Australian and use it (free online streams) exclusively for foreign news since we lack a conservative channel, and I can't be bothered buying a TV antenna. Our actual cable here is $50+ monthly for very few channels, and most are "custom Australian channels" that are just Tru TV garbage we get on free-to-air channels like Bargain Kings.
Is it the lack of general entertainment stations in the US? TV series? Sport?
I'd try Roku for One America News, but I feel I'd have buyers remorse.

Can't you just watch sport streams online? The Australian package, at least, contains only five sport channels (ESPN1/2 and FS1/2/3) and the chances you'd see a soccer game on any of them is zero. I get more enjoyment pirating Bein, BT and Eurosport than I would forking out $120USD monthly for the basic+sport package.
