Also why did "the Resistance" seem small, rag-tag, and poor just like the Rebellion?
Weren't they backed up by 5 planets that formed the Republic, and those planets looked like wealthy thriving metropolises?

Where were the armies of Gungans, Naboo-ans, Cloud City people, Wookiees, Ewoks, etc. uniting to fight against this First Order?

Who are the rebels and what are they rebelling against?

1: The First Order controls a large amount of planets in the Outer Rim and a good chunk of the old assets and ships of the Empire.

2: The Republic is huge, it's not just 5 planets in one system. That's just where their HQ was currently located, they move to a different system every few years.

3: The Resistance isn't the army of the Republic, it's a separate group operating inside First Order territory because the Republic didn't perceive the FO as a big enough threat to warrant sending their own fleets. The Republic and the First Order each had their own territories and weren't at war until the FO suddenly used their weapon.

Disney wanted it returned to the status quo of Empire. So in TFA the entire New Republic gets wiped out in an instant. And then the First Order gets wiped out in an instant.

And now after TFA we have nothing and nobody. Everyone is dead as the attention of the movie-going audience wanders away to whatever the next thing the media tells them to consume.
