The novel doesn't contradict the movie. It just expands on some stuff and adds small things like that scene although I didn't read it that closely so maybe there are errors. Both of them can then be canon naturally. But of course I doubt the makers of the next movie will consider anything else than the current one so I doubt the novel will matter that much even though it is said to be official canon.

he, like rey, started strong. he started off as a guy who ran away from something he thought was terrifying and horrible (even if it is slightly unbelievable, considering he was conditioned since birth). his bromance with poe was cool too
but he quickly devolved into a comic relief character around the same time rey devolved into a mary sue girlpower protag, and stayed that way for a lot of the movie, which fucking sucked because they both started off strong
