Why do people clap at the movies when no one can hear them?

Firstly, people CAN hear you. The other audience members can hear you. Watching movies with a crowd is a drastically different experience than watching movies by yourself.
Secondly, the tradition of responding vocally or in other ways to what happens in a movie was originated by the British, who would hiss and boo at villains and cheer for the protags. These people DID realize that the villains and protags were not able to hear the.
