Why do people clap at the movies when no one can hear them?
I've heard this only happens in America, I'm American and never understood this.

I don't know what confuses you about this. Is it just a thing that outside of America, people don't understand clapping is an expression of adulation? People all over the world talk to themselves, so why the fuck not clap for the hell of it?

It's an abstract form of showing respect that humans do, you're too autistic to understand.

It's to show their appreciation for the film or the scene or whatever with their fellow movie go-ers. They're not retarded; they no JJ isn't there.

People all over the world yell and cheer at tvs when watching sports, even though the athletes can't hear them. That's not any weirder than doing it at a movie.

You know the only reason he said that was because he was surrounded by the same fat nerdy neckbeards as him.

He's some fat loser who would never talk shit in real life, he's that loner who's shy as fuck but get him around some nerds like him and he suddenly gains a ton of confidence.

that wasn't even bad compared to the star wars nerd rage party posted early in the thread.

Firstly, people CAN hear you. The other audience members can hear you. Watching movies with a crowd is a drastically different experience than watching movies by yourself.

Secondly, the tradition of responding vocally or in other ways to what happens in a movie was originated by the British, who would hiss and boo at villains and cheer for the protags. These people DID realize that the villains and protags were not able to hear the.

You are now aware that you live in a world, a terrifying world, where there are people right this moment who use terms such as "canon" and "cinematic universe" when talking about films and television shows.

A terrifying world where imagined characters on a screen are required, according to those who discuss them, to adhere to "ground rules" set out by the creators of said-characters. A terrifying world where those that discuss these characters and their actions, are actually enraged if said-characters deviate from the mannerisms expected of them, the mannerisms that may have initially been set in the pages of a comic book.

Think about that. A comic book. For children. Yes, pictures and words on the same page, which are meant to be read by children, that are actually read by adults who then bicker and express their frustration at film-translations of these comic books not being "faithful". Faithful to a comic book. That's supposed to be read by young children.

This is your world. This is the world of popnerd culture. Terrifying, isn't it?
>>
>>63879517
Not American here. People at my screening myself included clapped at the beginning and end of the movie, and laughed at stuff like BB8 giving the thumb up.

This is the most ludicrous post I've read in ages.

Who could imagine that "cinematic universe" would be a term that people applied to .... cinema?!?!

Every film creates an internal reality, and must adhere to the rules set forth in that reality. EVERY film. It's just internal coherence. Every artform does it. Even low brow stuff.

Spainiard here, people clapped when the Star wars title came on screen. They also clapped moderately when Solo, Leia and all the others showed up and so they did at the end. Some of them even waited for the credits to end.

Because it's gay, annoying, and detracts from the movie.

Huh. I've always thought clapping is a congratulatory gesture so it only makes sense if the creator or performer is present.
