Vader became obsessed with rule. Even in IV it's pretty obvious he likes being in control. By Empire he already admits to Luke that he wants the two of them to replace the emperor and conquer the Empire as new rulers. Before that we have the trilogy set up how he betrayed the jedi. It wasn't perfect but at least he had motivation.

Vader was a whiny little bitch in the prequel movies, and a beaten old dog in the original trilogy. Even high ranking members of the Empire weren't overly afraid of putting him in his place. Vader never wanted to be on the dark side, it just sort of happened, and plotting to rise up with Luke against the Emperor is literally Sith Behavior 101.
On the other hand, Kylo Ren wants to be on the dark side. He's obsessed with living up to a perceived dark side legacy of Vader, and unlike Vader, instead of coming across as a whiny bitch, he actually seems angry.

They played Snoke all wrong. As soon as they show him, they reveal that it is just a hologram. Literally, his introduction and the hologram reveal are like 60 seconds apart. It is really stupid. They should have made you go through the entire movie thinking he was a giant, and then revealed at the end that it was just a hologram, and he was never in any danger when the base was being destroyed.
