I just rewatched this scene, and Darth Maul is actually pretty smart. At the beginning of the fight, Maul lures the two Jedi out into a large, open area, precariously balancing himself on an outcropping. One might think, "That makes no sense. Why would someone deliberately put himself into such an indefensible position?" He then jumps to a bridge, and the Jedi follow. He then kicks Obi-Wan off of the bridge. Darth Maul is no longer fighting two enemies, he is fighting one. As he fights Qui-Gon, he takes a retreating stance. If he thinks himself stronger than Qui-Gon, why retreat? Because he is putting more space between them and the younger Jedi. Eventually, all three characters end up separated in the forcefield hallway. After the first lifting of the fields, he is engaged with Qui-Gon alone, and is able to defeat him in single combat.
Darth Maul is smarter than two Jedi.

Yeah but how the fuck did he get killed by Obi-Wan when Darth Maul had the high ground?
Shit makes no sense.
>Obi Wan used his hatred and anger to kill Darth Maul

>has the high ground
>still gets beat by the high ground master

Wow look at how exposed his back is. Fucking absurd. I remember being wow'd at how fast they were fighting; because it's a fucking dance and it's ridiculous.

So, rewatching episode I and comparing it to TFA is what I was expecting, it's nothing but a glib facsimile.
If Star Wars was all I had access to as a child in terms of sci-fi I probably would become one of those crazy fanboys, but thankfully I had access to anime from very early on in my youth years that my mental balance is very stable.
Seriously, if you have watched Akira, you'd realize just how sophisticated anime is and it blows away anything Star Wars would have to offer.
A lot of people mention Ghost In The Shell, which has just enough of sexuality in the mix to draw in the western audience I suppose but I must say that Ghost In The Shell is not even in my top 10 anime, not even close, that's just how deep the world of anime is.
Some anime is so disturbingly mature like Fractale that I wish it would challenge the system and submit it as a Drama category in the Oscars just to bitchslap the snotty Academy.
It's not just the level of maturity and sophistication anime has, it's also quite original, entertaining, and visually fantastic. I would regard anime as the highest form of cinema art-form.
But hey, me preaching about anime won't do you any good, you gotta go out and see it for yourself just how much you are missing.
The recent one I would recommend to check out is Sword Art Online which is light and easy to get into anime for the first time yet appreciate it as much, but if you want the heavy stuff right off the line check out Guilty Crown in which the plot is so complex and twisted that you'll need extra oxygen pumped into your brain in order to comprehend everything, and if you want amazing visuals and a gripping drama that also has awesome mecha battles Aldnoah.Zero is the shit.
Seriously, if you know anime like I do, Star Wars looks like it's something for little kids.

>tfw someone actually seriously posted this before it became a copypasta

At the very beginning of the fight, Obi-Wan jumps over Maul, putting him behind. Maul separating Obi-Wan from the fight prevents such flanking.
>>63863102
From a certain point of view
>>63863018
It's definitely the best fight scene in the prequels. Sure beats Anakin holding his arm outstretched for an eternity so Dooku could cut it off.
>>63863102
ego?
I like how Maul loses his balance a little bit when he backs out onto the edge of the first platform. Makes it all seem a little more real.
>>63863353
to be fair thats all about the illusion of film.

That post was never serious

The prequels has such "higher ground" lightsaber fight scenes.
>>63863680
Man, their purpose may be unclear, like something from a videogame, but those laser walls were really great for the scene. I don't recall any other lightsaber fights in the prequels that weren't just Jedi flipping around each other in an open space.
My only complaint about this fight really is how many times they spin around to strike early on in the scene, they always look laughably sluggish. The only part that has any convincing speed to it is right after Obi Wan gets out from behind the laser wall.
>>63863102
Maul couldn't utilize it like Obi-Wan, of course. He's a Jedi Master for a reason.

high ground-posting > sheevposting

But he couldnt into high ground
>>63863237
what if it was obi wan who started anakin to the dark side? They actually go into the clone wars while the jedi temple masters say no to war. Then obi comes to his senses and tries to persuade anakin to return to the jedi temple but anakin wants to finish what he started
>>63863018
HAHAHAHAHAA
why are they both just attacking his lightsaber there? obi wan can easily just fucking stab his spine or whatever
Maul was a pretty cool villain. When you think about it he fucking handled a Jedi master and Obi-Wan at once there and only lost to fucking bullshit, after killing one.
Wouldn't it have been better for the series if like, they merged Maul and Dooku's characters into one character? He escapes after killing Qui Gon and that sets up an Obi-Wan/Anakin revenge feud with him. Then they defeat him together in the second or third movie but Anakin goes too far with the decapitation thing since he's an edgy faggot.
So a lightsaber strike should instantly cauterize the wound and destroy the nerve endings, effectively being totally painless, right? The only reaction from the victim ought to be the shock of what has just happened?

It's a good idea but then Doku would have to be rewritten. Part of Mauls appeal is that he's really just a silent warrior while Doku has political involvement in the clone wars.
