Was she a Mary Sue?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue
>>
>>63826447
No. She got rekt by Kylo twice and she only won when he was heavily nerfed.
>>
>>63826447
a glib facsimile
>>
>>63826447
did you really feel the need to link the wiki article?
>>
She is a self insert for chubby manchildren and their pussy like skin folds.
>>
>>63826447
She's actually one of the few characters called this that's a faithful use of the term.

Rey is introduced from nowhere with no familiar with any of the existing characters, but succeeds beyond all of them (often at their specific skillsets). She's drastically more powerful than any Jedi ever seen in the series before, and despite few-to-no character building or relationship building moments many of the established characters immediately say she's great and invite her to join their group. She picks up skills instantly and masters them with no training.

Rey is almost exactly like the actual Mary Sue that gave rise to the origin of the term. What I think could rescue her as a character is:
>Has a Revan-like backstory where she actually was trained as a Jedi but was then mind-wiped
>Falls to the dark side due to her immense natural skill/confidence, but redeems herself to finish the trilogy as a light/grey jedi
>>
WHY DON'T YOU FAGGOTS KNOW WHAT THIS WORD MEANS

YOU DUMB FUCKING CUNTS
>>
>>63826447
Yes.

She knows about stuff that she couldn't possibly know about (jedi mind tricks, knows how to read kylo ren's mind) and she also does them with an ease that not even other jedi could do (qui gon jinn, obi wan and luke skywalker had to do a hand motion to perform a mind trick, Rey doesn't).

Anybody arguing otherwise is retarded.

That image is hilarious, literally perfect description of /tv/
>>
>>63826768
Fuck off nigger.

Neither Jessica Jones or even Furiosa from Mad Max were Mary Sue characters.
>>
Yes, but she is a mary sue done right.
>>
>>63826447
mary sues are not just competent characters. there characters that literally ruin a story by sucking up attention and draining the plot of conflict.
>>
>>63826731

She's going to turn to the darkside when she realizes that Luke is her father and abandoned her on Jakku.
>>
>>63826768
Mary Sue is overused, but name one character flaw and name one defining character trait that isn't 'good at everything'.

Rey is by far the hardest character to do this for in SW history. Luke has clear flaws, he's impatient and whiny, we watch him overcome these in the OT. Anakin is impatient, whiny and lustful. We watch him get destroyed by his flaws in the prequels.
>>
I still have absolutely no idea what a Mary Sue is after repeated attempts to understand.

If you can explain what's bad about her character without using that term, please go ahead.
>>
>>63826447

Yes she is a Mary Sue in the sense that there is no conflict in the plot. You are meant to root for her and only her. It is made obvious that she is the good guy you should root for and you aren't given much of a choice in that as the bad guys are painted as pure evil rather then somewhat grey as in the case of vader in the original trilogy.

>substituting buzzwords for actual debate
pretty much /tv/ all over
>>
>>63826877
Which is presicely the case with Rey. She has already defeated the Darth Vader of the new trilogy, in the next movie when she gets trained she will be unstoppable.
>>
Yes

Finn only good character

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue
>The term "Mary Sue" comes from the name of a character created by Paula Smith in 1973 for her parody story "A Trekkie's Tale"[2]:15 published in her fanzine Menagerie #2.[3] The story starred Lieutenant Mary Sue ("the youngest Lieutenant in the fleet — only fifteen and a half years old"), and satirized unrealistic Star Trek fan fiction.[4] Such characters were generally female adolescents who had romantic liaisons with established canonical adult characters, or in some cases were the younger relatives or protégées of those characters.[citation needed] By 1976 Menagerie's editors stated that they disliked such characters, saying:

>Mary Sue stories—the adventures of the youngest and smartest ever person to graduate from the academy and ever get a commission at such a tender age. Usually characterized by unprecedented skill in everything from art to zoology, including karate and arm-wrestling. This character can also be found burrowing her way into the good graces/heart/mind of one of the Big Three [Kirk, Spock, and McCoy], if not all three at once. She saves the day by her wit and ability, and, if we are lucky, has the good grace to die at the end, being grieved by the entire ship
>>
>>63826913

if they give the female main character any sort of a flaw, the vocal feminists will all have ammo against disney.

disney's gonna play it as safely as possible and its gonna be average as hell.
>>
>>63826927

Wot

Kylo Ren is even more sympathetic than Vader was in A New Hope, where he was pretty irredeemably evil.

Is she Leia's daughter? I don't fucking get her connection to everyone.
>>
>>63827013
>the lightsaber calls out to you, like it called out to luke, how it called out to anakin

Come on anon it's not hard.
>>
>>63826955
okay ill come clean i haven't seen it yet so she might be as insufferable as you describe fair enough. im just used to it being a label of fanfic characters so bad no real media comes close.
>>
>>63827013
nobody acknowledges her like they do with kylo so no she's not anyone we've seen in ep7's daughter
>>
>>63826913
>flaw
cocky and overconfident leading to her being captured
>trait
caring. She didn't sell bb8. saved him in first place. Was devastated losing finn
>>
>>63826977

So who is Rey a self insert of? J.J? What the fuck do people mean by it? It doesn't make sense to call her it.
>>
>>63827112
Did you even read the greentext?
>>
>>63826927
that's not what that means removing conflict from the plot doesn't mean moral ambiguity. it has to do with the stakes of the story the struggle of the protagonist to fulfill their goal. mary sues remove conflict because they are to strong for the narrative they typically have the means to solve the struggle effortlessly thus negating all tension
>>
>>63827013
She has to be the daughter of someone who was a very strong force user (Luke's or someone elses).

Or else the fact that she is already very powerful with the force than someone who had some training (Kylo Ren) makes no sense.
>>
>>63827092
Being smug when you are curbstomping eceryone is not a "flaw", she doesn't get captured because of that.
>>
>>63826447
She may be, but I didn't mind it all really. The Star Wars universe is a fairy tale with idealistic heros and villains. Go back to Nolan for your ridiculous bleak realism in comic book context.
>>
>>63827166
>She has to be the daughter of someone who was a very strong force user (Luke's or someone elses).

Why? Is it so inconceivable that someone just start up a new dynasty of Force wielders themselves and not be the scion of the Solos, Skywalkers, Kenobis, Windus or whatever the fuck else?
>>
I got confused by her character.
I she tech proficient or is she just lucky a pushing the right buttons because of muh force.

There were times in the film where we think she knows what she was doing and there were times were she was shown to be practically clueless and just lucked out.

Also how the fuck does she not recognize the Falcon?
>>
>>63827140

Yes. I have no fucking idea what anybody means when they say this phrase.
>>
>>63827009

That is not true because Vader always cared about his family which is his one redeemable quality. Kylo Ren killed his father which makes him irredeemable
>>
>Can pilot a ship better than two trained Tie Fighter pilots through the ruined Star Destroyers her first time at the seat, without a co-pilot.
>Knows all about how technology works and how to rig and hack most computers even though she's only been working with wreckage
>Scavenger that fights off 4 trained soldiers with a staff because apparently living in the ghetto makes you better at martial combat than four heavily trained soldiers.
>Han Solo and Chewie immediately take a liking to her and invite her to work on the ship
>Better at using the force after an hour and a half than Luke Skywalker was after two movies.
>Resists and reflects a mind probe from a sith lord without any training
>Only character to "awaken" and go force super saiyan even though this has never been a thing and is just a convenient plot-point made specifically for her to be better at the force than everyone else.
>Sent off alone by the Resistance to find Luke when they've literally only just met her.
>Literally no flaws and her only downside is that she was abandoned, so instead of it being a flaw in her character, its a point thats supposed to make us also feel sad for her.

Closest thing to a Mary Sue I've seen since Twilight was popular.

The weaboo muh-waifu crowd and Tumblerscum are going to defend her with all their might, but anyone who pays attention can see that its true. These are the same sort of people who would vote Hillary Clinton regardless of her actual policies, just because she has a vagina.
>>
>>63826447
She kinda was, yeah. Not really any flaws pointed by the story, she impresses and is liked by legacy characters, she overcomes and through sheer bullshit beats the villain up.

Yeah, pretty Mary Sue actually.
>>
>>63827293

Kylo Ren cares about his family too, he's just a dumbfuck that goes full-sasuke thinking that breaking his bonds will make him stronger.
>>
>>63827333

He doesn't care for his family enough not to kill his father.
>>
>>63826613
it helped me a little. i woke up today to discover the internet decided to overuse a new term
>>
>>63827798
But bruh, Disney needs to add that shock value so you'll think its good. It worked for Game of Thrones, right?
