The first few seasons are such a weird contrast to what the show is today. Only similar show I can think of is the Real World.

That's the problem with returnee seasons, they're all used to it so nothing as interesting happens. Also the conditions were apparently more miserable than expected so at some point they had to jump in and build them a shelter.
