Watching ANH would easily solve Jame's question with Yoda since Yoda literally says he's been watching Luke for years and how he's always dreaming about adventures and shit.
So yes, Yoda was testing Luke, but it's still possible that he was going senile and that would be fun.
Also, their reactions are typical of a first impression where you're don't really know what to say other than the fact that some things worked and some didn't.
One they sat a while longer everything bad about the movie will soak in.
