There's a lot of energy-field type stuff around. It may be that the ST either knew, or had a hunch that his weapon would be a match for it. He didn't necessarily have to know what a lightsaber was, or what its capabilities were. He may have been just "An energy weapon? I'll take down that traitor with MY energy weapon and teach him a lesson". etc. etc.

Why do people want a name, face, and backstory for this guy? That's some Wookiepedia shit. I like that he's just a rank and file trooper going above and beyond the call of duty. I mean, the entire sequence then is just all flashing lights and no substance considering that at no point again do we see that weapon again. It's not like that gut set up that stormtroopers would now use that weapon, just that he used it. And since he's just a random guy then really what was the point in giving him such a powerful weapon?
Even in the prequels, Grievous droid bodyguards wielded those electric staffs. It's not like a droid just randomly pulled a staff in the middle of the battle, it made sense that Griveous bodyguards would be equipped with weapons that could counter Jedi. It makes no sense that this random dude just happens to have it.

Think of it this way, the empire was massive and mostly fell due to infighting. Had Palpatine survived, it is likely that the war would have been in a similiar place after the end of the battle of yavin. With the emperors death, planets and generals turned by the day and over 30 years a large portion of them were disorganized. The New Order is probably the remains of the empire that feel under a single powerful leader (Snoke) and has finally collected it's dispersed resources.

Vader was a badass villian who with the prequels you got to see his origins after already knowing what he turns into. Palpatine manipulating him and the idea of the prophecy makes his evil even more real.
Kylo is basically Anakin in Ep III, but far weaker. He is definitely evil but still conflicted about it, hence Han's attempt to "turn him to the light side" screaming RotJ. It ruins the suspense entirely knowing he is just Snokes bitchboy who gets his ass kicked by his cousin in her first real duel. Yeah yeah, force is strong and shit, there is no reason why Snoke should have picked Kylo unless Snoke is even more powerful and pulling strings in the background, knowing full well the established trope of apprentice killing master and all. The literal space Nazi officers made better villains than either of the siths, if you even can call them that - where's the talk of "the power of the dark side" shit?
We will see, but definitely underwhelming. The prequels and original trilogy really spoiled our expectations for a new epic and climactic conflict, everything feels like a rehash but in different order.

I would love if in maybe Ep VIII or IX some of the troopers defect like Finn and become some new Army of the Republic. I really miss the old Clone Wars Trooper days, back when it was cool to root for the storm troopers. Third one is built in a planet, onsite shields, and a well defended thermal oscillator, the only thing that could cause a collapse.
