PEOPLE ACTUALLY THOUGHT THIS WOULD BEAT AVATAR!!
I know what you're thinking

>That is a huge record!! Beat Harry Potter that had 43.5 million!!

Harry Potter ended only making 381 domestically

Star Wars will only hit 400-500 if it's lucky

nobody wants to go watch han die again!!

Cameron's movie had a heart, but it was an environmentalist one. People prefer to pretend to be space adventurers than tribesmen trying to save an alien tree, which is understandable.

I, for one, believe that the theater experience has become so shitty that people don't want to go as much as they used to want to. Noisy, rude, inconsiderate people. FUCKING BABIES. Everyone have has a blue ray player and a big screen TV now.

You get the same experience, if not better, at home. Especially with something like Star Wars where you'll have faggots clap when Chewwy comes on screen. No normie wants to deal with that.

>>
>>63789717
Marketed on the success of Cameron's past works plus there was a long, drawn-out marketing campaign based on the unknown. A 15 minute sneak preview (that you had to pay to get in) 4 months before release really hyped people up because no one was allowed to fully explain what it was. Add to that the hype behind the advancements in technology they harped on for over a year, etc...

It was a perfect combination of everything falling into place at the perfect time.
>>
>>63789865
jimposting is a thing. it's just that talking about a 6-year old, relatively straightforward film becomes unnecessary.
>>
>>63789886
Box office success is the only thing people can brag about with star wars. Other than that, it's a meritless franchise.

It's not even anywhere near the best at box office success either. Say what you want about Jim's films, but when he makes a "soulless cashgrab" movie at least he has the decency to make it the highest-grossing movie of all time.

It is by far the most culturally influential franchise in America and you'd have to be deluded to think different.

Also Episode IV made more than Cameron's movies adjusted for inflation, in addition to inspiring Cameron to become a filmmaker.

I love reading people trying to credit everything except the movies for Avatar and Titanic making so much money. It's like they'd rather blame evil wizardry than accept Cameron knows how to tap into a long-lost Old Hollywood sensibility.
>>
>>63789803

Avatar was marketed as this groundbreaking 3D movie, remember that 3D movies were relatively new when Avatar came out, peope were curious to see 3D on the big screen, and it actually had great 3D effects compared to most movies.

Add to that the simple Pocahontas story that every pleb can understand and you've got a hugely succesful movie.
>>
STAR WARS WILL BREAK 3 MILLION MARK MY WORDS AVATARKUCKS
>>
>>63789923
There's also the fact that the story was as simplistic and naive as possible so no one could really complain about it without looking like they were trying too hard to be intellectual or clever. Cameron got it, he just knows how to appeal to absolutely everyone in a way that no one quite understands.

>>

Avatar was rewatched because people literally wanted to live on Pandora

Plus the visuals were like nothing before or since even without 3D. The way it used colors was like an overstimulation of part of the brain.

Plus it (like the original Star Wars and also like Titanic and Gone With The Wind and The Sound of Music) ends on an emotional high, while TFA ends with us going "oh is that Luke?"
>>
$57 mil on Thursday opening is insane though OP. Avatar didn't even pull those numbers opening night. Avatar didnt even do that great on its first week. It only got where it was due to theaters keeping it longer than usual. If it didn't get to stay longer then it wouldn't have got to where it was now.
>>
>>63791581
what were you disappointed by, exactly?

I didnt expect it to be citizen kane or anything story wise; not every movie needs to be that

I just expected it as entertainment for the masses and it delivered way beyond what is the hollywood median
>>
>>63791881
>It only got where it was due to theaters keeping it longer than usual.

they kept it longer because people kept going to see it and theatre chains get to keep a higher % of the ticket price in that situation for all movies.
>>
>>63791881
they kept it longer than usual because the ticket sales werent letting up

also you cannot compare avatar and star wars for opening. Avatar isnt a sequel in a well established francised that spanned decades. Avatar didnt have this level of hype and marketing.

Tell me, I am having trouble remembering - what was DiCaprio's character's first name in Titanic? Was it Jeff? John? Joe? If only it had been in the dialog a couple more times....

It's less impressive when you realise that VHS wasn't around then and it was rereleased at least 5 times. Also the fact that the original theatrical run in 1977 only made $410m of its eventual $775 gross, ~$250m of which came from the release of the special edition in 1997, at a much similar dollar to 2015.

All that and it still didn't even manage to beat Avatar or Titanic.
>>
>>63794366
no

starwars TRIED to have all of that but it was wooden, rushed and forced, with no room for the elements to grow

it wasnt believable

explosions were good, but there was literally no tension and i didnt feel the love romance wise. The villian was non menancing, a lame emo faggot. Han dies in the most underwhelming way ever. Not some badass fight. Not a final hurrah. Just a few seconds of feigned shock on his face.

story was rehashed shit and there was nothing that could have saved it

Reminder:

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery—celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: ‘It’s not where you take things from—it’s where you take them to." —Jim Jarmusch

episode 7 is just for starting a story

episode 8 will make the 3 billion mark, middle of the trilogy and improves on the 7th one as well as leaving a decent cliffhanger like in ESB

episode 9 will be riding on the success of the other two and will be overacted, over cgi'd and similar to the prequels more than anything with all the money disney would throw to make a decent 3rd trilogy finale

They picked a very bad time to start making new star wars movies. By this time people are sick of reboots, sequels and the marvel cinematic universe, already cringing at the prospect of a DC cinematic universe. They make new Star Wars and it's just cashing in to them, myself included.

Star Wars was officially over after Ep. III.The Sith rose and fell. Making them fucking rise again just looks like fanfiction by now.

holy cow, okay, i was looking it up and also found out the entire starwars franchise was purchased for 4 billion bucks. and some sweden fatty makes 2.5 billion for a badly programmed java program he wrote himself from a stolen idea.

of course everyone assuming im shitting on movies, im not. im blown away by the revelation of this, and kinda disappointed. what happened? something thats been around my entire life and is a huge massive franchise is now getting beaten by stupid mobile games? why? who do i need to kill to change this?
>>
>>63806456
are you daft, son?

the film will gross close to $2 billion at the box office when its done

then everyone will buy it again when its available digitally and on blu-ray. add a couple billion more there. then they will release a special edition directors cut in the theater and make another $500 million. and release it digitally again and make another billion

then they will sell tens of billions of dollars in merchandise, and this is one film of the new trilogy.

>>63806617
dude they make 5 to 10x as much after the box office. the BO is just the starting point
>>
The Dark Side compelled me to take a piss during the movie.

I left right as Han and Leia were getting mushy about their son as Han was preparing to sneak onto Star Killer. Got back right before Finn captured the Stormtrooper captain.

So what did I miss?

What did Han and Leia say about their son and relationship?

How did they sneak onto Star Killer?
>>
>>63806617
also that $4 billion was for all of lucasfilm, not just the star wars franchise

if you think microsoft is going to turn a profit on minecraft any time soon you are completely delusional.
>>
>>63806766
i know THAT, but that call of auto whatever made roughly 3 billion in what, 2 years? 2.7 billion is what, this starwars movies estimated profits? who do we kill?

>>63806899
who cares if microsoft does, the fat man made 2.5 off of them.

again, everyones assuming somehow im like, arguing FOR gaming. im not, im asking how the hell some fat man made almost as much as the ENTIRE lucasfilms worth. it shouldnt be this way, man
>>
>>63807036
no, its profits will be quadruple that when you include merchandise which is what this franchise is all about.

box office numbers are gross sales. they will only profit on a fraction of the box office numbers. get over the box office numbers already

minecraft generates about $300m a year. microsoft valued it based on being able to use it to leverage xbox sales and xblive subs. also the fat man as you like to call him took in around a billion after all said and done. he owned 70%. kudos to him for suckering microsoft though

now back to disney and lucas. disney got an amazing deal. lucas wanted the franchise in the hands of a studio he trusts to continue his legacy. he could have gotten more
