Hello, my name is Mary Sue...
While it doesn't sink the film for me would it be so bad to have this girl be bad at something? She speaks droid, speaks wookie, is an excellent pilot despite the only thing we are told comes from the character's assertion. I could buy that she is tech savvy spending her life tinkering with old parts and scavenging. But literally she just masters any skill the plot calls for at the moment with just enough skill to save the day.
Come on, a character flaw would be nice.

Rey feels like they are playing it too safe, she will likely end up being Luke's daughter to boot thus increasing her sue level another rank.
What really made the prequels suck the life out of SW was the overuse of coincidence connections.. Everyone is related or met before.. It makes the world feel smaller.

I liked Rey but she was essentially female hero played safe.
She was the protagonist for the first act and then takes a back seat for Han and then is the protagonist again.

Luke was a good pilot, we see his t-16 in the garage. He isn't a litteral homeless scavenger.
Luke is constantly doubting himself. He wants to give up when he can't master a task like the training remote. Even at the end of the film in the trench run he needs another push from obiwon to let the force guide him.
Luke learns confidence, that he, a simple farm boy from nowhere can make a difference.

Obi Wan became Force 10+ Ghost Power and helped Luke hit the bullseye. Obi told Vader that he'd become more powerful than Vader could possibly imagine. So Obi faked Luke's kill. That's why he tells Luke in ROJ that he can't help him anymore against Vader.

Pretty much. I actually liked her, and Daisy had something about her that made her endearing to me, but I wish they'd had the courage to give her some flaws. Her only weakness we know about is insecurity about being an orphan, but it has no bearing on the story.

If that was the only thing wrong I wouldn't mind a single bit. For example the end scene with rey and chewie in the falcon could have been done differently, maybe a quick set of shots where they establish them traveling togeather across half the galaxy, a stop here or there, a hasty get away, chewie helping her learn the falcon a little better. Then disappearing off into hyperspace and roll credits.

she's a Mary sue in the sense that she overcomes most problems with ease, and she suffers far less consequences for failing then the other characters. Attacking the black guy was sensible considering the robot told her about the jacket, she was making it fine on her own, she had a justifiable and understandable internal conflict which made her hesitant to join Han. She isn't perfect, but she just struggles less then everyone else in the movie and the plot always seems to give her a convenient way out.
