Kylo Ren basically believes he's more powerful than he actually is, he wants to be like his Grandfather, Darth Vader, but he hasn't even completed his training. Once he left Luke's side he crafted his own lightsaber, because he thinks he's better than he is, however it has been purely crafted and therefore it has exhausts as the core has too much power which must be released in more than one way. It would be like trying to drive a car without an exhaust.
