Destroying Alderaan was justifiable as it played major role in the rebellion by backing the rebels and could be compared to firebombing dresden or nuking Hiroshima.

Galaxy is huge. When the rebellion beat the empire they took majority of empire's former worlds and made peace with what was left of the empire.
What was left of the empire became first order. The republic sees the first order as threat so they fund the rebellion (resistance) in its' territory.
