It seemed like Rey tapped into the Dark Side to finish off Kylo. The way she started to stab and bludgeon him was very reminiscent of the way Luke batters Vader in ROTJ before he regains control of himself.

How did he and like five other guys kill that entire academy of Jedi students like himself if this is all he's got? This is some jobbing typical of the prequels really. It would have been much better if he absolutely demolished Finn like when he knocked him down with one blow, then proceeded to do the same to Rey after a bit of toying around to show what an imposing threat he is supposed to be and they both have to be saved by Chewbacca firing the Falcon cannons or something. He'd just killed his father and was trying to get through the internal conflict between the light and the dark side. So he got shot and was actively bleeding. He was emotionally compromised. He was already pissed off by Rey BECAUSE this new force user was getting the drop on the First Order. As we saw in Jedi when Vader pissed off Luke, he completely lost his composure. It also didn't help that Kylo Ren was basically a fucking psychopath. It's really not a stretch that he lost that fight.

That was one of the great things about this movie, how much it completely disregarded the prequels. The term Sith is off-handedly mentioned, and in the context that they were just another evil organization which diminishes them, and then we saw Coruscant get blown the fuck up. Even Han Solo couldn't cheat his way through the amount of distance this movie makes from the prequels.

And it also established why Vader is threatening, as soon as Luke got a lucky blow in on his shoulder he disarmed Luke in seconds.

I'm perfectly okay with Kylo Ren being weak. It's shown consistently that he's pretty much incompetent and insecure, for fucks sake he throws temper tantrums. He's not Vader, he's essentially the edgy goth tryhard kid with daddy issues.

Leia was barely force sensitive. All the power was on Lukes side of the family it seemed (excluding expanded universe fuckery but that doesn't count). Luke had no more than 20 minutes of training with Obi-Wan before he eventually met yoda but otherwise came to his powers primarily through instinct (trust your feelings, luke).

Leia's son was mediocre and half-assed. He learned a few dark side tricks but he wielded his lightsaber like a child with a stick. He was just a spoiled twink who merely tasted power.

Luke's Daughter was a more naturally gifted force user like her father and she was also an experienced fighter. She had heard the stories about what the Jedi could do and the rest came naturally. Like her father she was guided to use the force instinctively.

Not all jedi (or force users) are created equal.

Luke did the exact same thing. Ob-Wan gave him no real training besides vague "trust your feelings" comments. Luke disabled his own targeting computer and let the force guide his actions to destroy the first deathstar. He also pulled his saber from the ice on hoth without ever seeing a Jedi use telekinesis before.

Luke was 100% instinct before he met yoda, and with yoda he only really got in a few days of training before leaving to confront vader the first time.

The biggest lesson luke learned was to release his own limitations with the "size matters not" speech. The only limit to lukes power was his limited imagination of what was possible and what was not.

Rey awoke as a force user simply after Solo told her "it was all real. All those stories about the light and the dark". She had her first vision shortly after when she touched lukes saber. She was far more open minded with the force and less inhibited than Luke was.

Kylo Ren was gimped from his many previous injuries and severe mental trauma from Spoilers and his innate volitility.

Rey had innert powers from the get go, she just never realized it. Her faith in thd jedi myths is what let her use it so easily as doubt canonically limits force use. Not too mention she's able to use battle meditation.

It's like no one who watched this movie understands this character. He was probably my favorite, very complex, insecure and volatile.
He has almost no formal training and cannot control his emotions well, of course when shown a real opponent he will lose. He slaughtered innocent people in the beginning of the movie, not soldiers.

Without believable motivation for the antagonists they just become worthless background, no better than george's battledroids.

Nothing was solved by this and it did nothing for the story or her characters development. The rey force reveal had already happened earlier in the film and we didn't need to see her preform mind tricks, read minds, move objects for us to understand she was force sensitive. Finn han and chewy could have rescued her and the battle at the end didn't require it. We already knew kylo had self doubt from his own exposition. We already knew she was a capable brawler and talented tinkerer. If we had seen rey and finn battle a wounded kylo together at the end only to barely escape with their lives, after a weak and emotional accidental force push from rey allowed them to flee, it would have made much more sense in context of the other films and wouldn't have cheapened the jedi abilities.

I liked everything else. If these 2 things were changed the subsequent movies could have been much better. As it stands, i don't think they will ever be more than just fun movies.

He didn't, it was over time. There's three years between IV and V, and another year between V and VI. Also being a complete jedi doesn't require mastery of the Force. Luke became powerful in the Force by Return of the Jedi and much wiser himself, becoming a full Jedi.

So like Kylo is still training. He's been shot by a gun that was so strong, Han was like "holy shit this thing has a serious kick to it" when he fired it.
He kept hitting it casue he was so pissed at himself. It's fucking cold outside and snowing. He just used 80% of his "just walk it off" power on Finn, who untrained still managed to waste a lot of his time and power. Now he has to fight another person, who not as well trained in sword fighting as he is, still keeps their own against him. Plus they are not bleeding freely from the side. He's naturally just getting tired, and even if your a super evil Sith, his still only human (pretty young too) and you still kinda need blood and energy to keep fighting. That is why after fighting Finn, chasing Ray for like 10 minutes,then fighting her, he kinda just couldn't go on anymore, and he was defeated.

This is a fair point that I didn't really consider, and meshes well with my Binary Sunset thing. It's something I feel like happens with every new movie. They're all about time, and moving things forward, so you get a 2 hour movie that just feels rushed and "busy." There's no time for the characters--or the audience--to take in what's happening, or what has happened.

Compare Binary Sunset scene--Luke realizes he's in trouble with this droid, but can't deal with it immediately. Audience does too.

See Falcon ride to Death Star: The emptiness of space + tragedy of Alderaan, a slow scene where you take in just how powerful the bad guys are and plain Luke is.

Post-Obi-wan Rush: The moments after Obi-wan is killed, Luke is swept up in something bigger than himself. He has little dialogue and it's very "numb" feeling--a director's choice, as it reflects the experience of losing his friend/master.

TFA literally has none of this--would be better if it did.

Ok, during the interrogation scene, Kylo tries to read her mind, instead SHE READS HIS - this is where she picks up basic knowledge of what powers he possesses. Seeing that she was able to use one his powers, she tries again - on a lowly stormtrooper - and we all know stormtroopers are retarded.

she wasnt a master with the lightsaber either - the problem is - NEITHER IS KYLO. Luke is LITERALLY the only Jedi, Kylo killed all the other trainee kids. Therefore, Kylo has NEVER BEEN IN A LIGHTSABER BATTLE. Plus, his fighting style is pure anger and hacking, while she has previous melee weapon experience with her staff.

Luke spent four years warring with the Rebellion and getting the guidance of two of the greatest Jedi Masters in history and even then, being the direct blood of the Chosen One" his Force power was undeveloped until a New Hope when Yoda tells him his training is complete. Luke didn't start Force tricking people from his first hour knowing he could use the Force, he didn't pull his lightsaber from the snow until three years later with extreme concentration that he learned from Obi Wan. The most impressive thing he did with the Force on his first day was managing to deflect a droid's blaster zap after getting shot a bunch.

You're essentially just proving what everyone is complaining about, Rey being able to use the Force proficiently within hours, to the point she can overcome a trained opponent, is fucking retarded. It's the only aspect of the movie that was an absolute botch job.

As soon as they are analyzed in the slightest they fall apart. Which is why the prequels ruined them. We could assume that they had motivations for what they were doing before the prequels came out and made it stupid. Now sheev is a joke meme and vader is a sand hating dumbass beta. It's a stretch that skill in a staff translates to automatic proficiency with a light sabre. If the movie showed Rey overpowering Ren purely with the force, I wouldn't have a problem. I just didn't think that the movie justified her sudden acquired skill with the light sabre. Everything about Rey just seems too convenient, like the plot was build around her demonstrating her abilities.

But that's kind of what I was expecting to be honest. When you look at Abrams movies, the characters never develop. They just get better.

The first Star Trek movie was a miracle in that Kirk and Spock actually changed a little bit as people from the beginning to end, but even then it was just a basic cliche change of "oh I should learn to put my trust in others!"

and as for 4 and 5 it is never explained how or why the empire exists, who they are, where they came from. They are just bad guys. They do things that make little to no sense all tge time. I know it's nitpicking and at the end of thr day they were made as simple binary good vs evil movies for kids but imo the most interesting but unexplored aspect of starwars is the empire and the dark side.

I just hope it gets deeper into it and that they maybe find a way to make the order more complex.
