It's a flawed but ultimately good movie. /tv/ just loves to nitpick the shit out of everything but in the end I thoroughly enjoyed it and would like to see it again now that I know all the major plot points and can pay more attention to the finer details.
>>
I'm glad I had low expectations. It wasn't great, but I was pleasantly surprised.

So what were those four planets that got ker'sploded? That all happened rather quickly and I didn't catch what planets were supposed to be destroyed. Was one Coruscant?
>>
>>63766775
I don't think so. I think it was just the Republic fleet's base on the outer rim.

They really could have explained that better. It didn't look too much like coruscant

Ah, I had wondered about that, like you said they could have spent an extra minute or two with that whole sequence to give it more weight
I mean that's gotta be on the order of 20b billion people suddenly crying out in terror, if those planets were as populated as Earth. The shot of the beam entering the atmosphere was cool though, poor bastards.

Poe and Finn being bros was really well done, their opening sequence together was fun as fuck.

Just got back from seeing it.

I thought it was pretty good, probably a 75/100 if you wanted a rating.

Now I think JJabrams played it a little too safe and basically put so many nods from the original trilogy that he got whiplash, but those were still enjoyable.

Kylo Ren was not my favorite villain, he just looked and acted like a pussy, but that is part of his character. You can just see his insecurities, and his reason for wearing the mask to look tougher.

Finn, Po, and Rey were all great, but I had to question why everyone can use a lightsaber so flawlessly. I thought it took force training or something?

Either way, pretty good. Needs a better villain

Felt the same with that thing, I mean Kylo Ren has trained for years and is easily overpowered by 15 minutes of self taught force power and shitty blade mastery, that is just dumb. Also Han's death was stupid, totally unnecesary, just because JJ wanted an analogy to Obi Wan's sacrifice in EP IV

It wasn't that bad, you fucking "meme" crying baby.

I was hoping the movie wasn't going to carry itself through nostalgia. It kinda did but it also built itself a nice story that doesn't have to hold onto the skywalkers.

Fin was better than I expect, but he still did too many goofy things.

>>
>>63767421

My main problem was How quickly they glossed over the new Death Star plot and how quickly it got destroyed, like it was just a run-of-the-mill thing that they did every other week, nevermind that it destroyed 5 planets in one go just now.

My favourite parts were the cinematography (there are some really nice shots especially at the beginning) and the part where Kylo turns fully bad just as the sun disappears.
>>
I saw it a few hours ago. /tv/ had me pretty nervous, I'm not going to lie. There's a few things they could improve upon but overall the movie seems pretty fine. Poe, despite not being around that much, was my favorite part of the movie. Wedge was my favorite character in the original trilogy despite having a really minor role until the last movie. Seeing a similar guy be one of the main characters was great. Rey was the low point of the movie, honestly. She was necessary in the same way Luke was necessary in the original trilogy. She also plays into Disney's girl power thing they seem to do a lot lately but what can you do when it's 2015 and there's all this retarded gender politics stuff going on. She's force sensitive and that sort of explains why she's pro at almost everything she does. I guess. Kylo Ren would have won that duel if he hadn't been fucked up hardcore by that blaster shot.

Speaking of Kylo Ren, I actually really enjoy him. The whole time he was dueling Rey I was thinking "this is a kid in black robes". Not in a bad way. He's desperately trying to live up to Vader and he's trying to fight the light side the same way Luke and Anakin had to fight the dark side. Those temper tantrums aren't lolsorandumbJJXD. They're a kid lashing out (inb4 some stupid novel makes him 30) at bad news.

I have high hopes for VIII. I feel like it's the episode where we'll see a lot of Finn, Poe, and that chrome captain while Rey and Kylo train. It'll be REALLY interesting if we get to see both of them get trained. Speaking of Finn, he was actually pretty great.

Overall, my expectations are pretty high for VIII. I'm expecting one of the main cast + Luke or Snook to die. Needs more chrome captain (like in a main character capacity) and it'll be great.

Yeah, but it's kinda the same idea behind it, the death of someone important. It felt so rushed to me though, really it would have had much more sense in episode 8 or 9 when they would have developed Kylos backstory.
It makes me seriously think Ford did not want to act as Solo anymore, and he just said kill me in this movie as I won't do it anymore

>He called Vader Grandfather, you dummy. And then Rey calls him out for being afraid of not being as strong as Vader

And he says he "killed" the person he was before when he became Kylo Ren, pretty much mirroring Vader's "killing" of Anakin.

Seems like the guy couldn't take the whole light side/dark side balance, and just went off the deep end with the Dark side, where he could kill/dispose of everything that got in his way and could possibly make him feel guilty.

Killing Han means he no longer has to worry about dealing with dad because dad is dead.

>>63770419
>That cgi lady was retarded. Snoke also looked Hobbit-prequel tier. Literally what the fuck was thay shit?

Snoke is the one thing I refuse to even try to defend about this movie.

I was expecting some kind of cosmic horror type entity, but instead we get something that looks like fucking Gollum in a snuggy. And all he does is sit around in a chair in a robe and issue orders/make cryptic remarks like Palpatine 2.0.

And was there any real reason why he needed to be CGI? He was just a skinny guy with a badly scarred left cheek.

From a visual standpoint, the dogfighting was almost an improvement. There were some cool cockpit shots where the camera panned around and if there wasn't as much shit flying all over the screen and I was more emotionally invested, it would have been better.

>Self contained story
I absolutely agree with you. We all know that there are going to be sequels but the movie still needs to be self contained.

>>rey (and finn to a lesser extent) can seemingly pick up a lightsabre with ease and defeat a semi sith

Kylo was still injured after Chewie shot him. He was repeatedly pausing in battle to tend to his wound.

>>rey can use the force without any knowledge of it, what it does and how to use it

Yeah, that was some straight up bullshit. Resisitng mindrape/torture through sheer mental will is one thing. Pulling off a Jedi Mind Trick, Force Pull/Push when you weren't even sure Jedi even existed is a whole other thing.

Pretty much this.

JJ was really trying so hard to give everyone a wet dick to the original trilogy. Everything to the plot point literally had the same pacing as a New Hope. Which is sad because it was slightly unoriginal. Other than that it's a great fun film to watch.

The pacing was the same For ANH honestly.
>>
Entertaining, but frustrating to watch for long time fans. It feels a little too obvious that they needed to get rid of the older actors ASAP so that future films wouldn't need to worry about them.

As a result, the pacing just feels off. We don't get a good sense of Rey's background or the world she grew up in. Finn is a Marty-stu with almost no characterization/development. Kylo Ren, ironically, is the most interesting protagonist because he actually struggles with feelings, but even then all that does is set up another cliffhanger.

Friendly reminder that Kylo Ren is on some sort of inverse heroes journey. He went up against almost insurmountable odds at the end of the movie and almost prevailed. We will see him grow as a character in the next movie.

Finn is a trained for child hood fighter, who still gets beaten straight up dueling a storm trooper.

He almost holds his own against a badly wounded Kylo, but is eventually taken down and would have been killed if not for Rey.

Rey is a skilled fighter, innately very powerful with the Force, and came out on top because the already wounded Kylo was hurt further by Finn, and Kylo is legitimately intimated by her.

Honestly, I was surprised they DIDN'T do that.

By the end of the film, Han is the only old character killed off. Everybody else is alive, and it seems that R2 and Chewie are Rey's new sidekicks as she goes on to train under Luke in episode VIII. Fin, who looked like he was taking up the mantle of male lead is now dead/comatose/in recovery. I honestly did NOT see that coming.
>>
>>63771373
Not really, between the sound design, visual, scene direction, over all length, silent moments, and how the action was done, A New Hope was fast paced, but it wasnt irritating. it took time to slow the fuck down, establish shots and characters, let shit sink in.

and best of all, enjoy the atmosphere.

this movie when it wasnt doing a FUCK ton of close up shots and shitty camera work and cramming in stupid ass jokes and references.....had nothing.

no pause, no relief, no time to soak in the atmosphere, not wide open establishing shots, ect.

honestly this movie was paced like shit framed like shit, shot like shit, and somehow felt CRAMPED as shit.

watch the originals, george lucas almost NEVER had close ups. Nothing beyond nipple and top of the head cut off points.

and definitely not this shitty hard zooming or that bullshit violation of rules of thirds when doing a close up.

all of this could have been avoided if they just made kylo blind

it would a) give him an excuse to wear the mask, and b) make the fact that rey rekt him more believable. the wound is just passable as a explanation for why kylo lost.
>>
Am I the only one who was incredibly bothered by Han popping out of lightspeed just before hitting the surface of that planet/superweapon? The precision that would be necessary to do something like that is far beyond the scope of what even a Jedi could do, much less a 70 year old man in a broken down ship.

>Shortly after this, Luke carried the weapon with him to the Cloud City on Bespin in a bid to rescue his friends from Darth Vader. Engaging the Sith Lord in a lightsaber duel, Luke demonstrated his vastly increased skill with the weapon, impressing its former wielder. Ultimately, however, Luke's lightsaber hand was sliced off by Vader and fell, along with the lightsaber it carried, into the depths of Cloud City

>The lightsaber, still clutched by Luke Skywalker's hand, had become lodged in one of Cloud City's lower air shafts and eventually was recovered by a maintenance drone. The drone deposited the hand and the lightsaber in Smelting Core D. There, it was discovered by Groggin, the Smelting Core's supervisor.

Obviously the 2nd part is a part of the lore, and considering this movie brought back Chewie even though Chewie is supposed to be dead (I'm pretty sure) I doubt they'll use this explanation, and probably ignore it all together.

because Star wars is a galaxy size ADVENTURE FILM.

another example: Conan the barbarian.Few close ups, lot of wide and enviornment shots.

took its time, didnt get bloated, let atmosphere, time and music show emotion.

Yup, as the only ones available are the last edits from Lucas with shit like NOOOOOOOOO in Return of the Jedi. It's like someone is interrupting you inside the movie while you're watching it. Han has been wanting his character gone since the end of a New Hope. The entire reason he got frozen in Empire Strikes Back is because he was on the fence about ever coming back to the series. Him dying in this movie was likely one of his conditions to even accept appearing in it.

Nothing felt like it had any explanation or setup.
Who were the Republic? Why was I supposed to care that they got blown up?
Why was the First Order different from the Empire? Why did they need to change the name if they were basically the same organization?

More importantly, why was the movie an almost shot-for-shot remake of Episode IV?
Basically everything that happened in IV happened in VII but with a new coat of paint
Cute, nonverbal droid has valuable information to deliver to the Rebelli- I mean Resistance from the evil Empi- I mean First Order.
Person from small shitty desert community gets swept up to fight against the First Order in the Millennium Falcon.
Meanwhile, they're being hunted by Darth Va- I mean Kylo Ren, a black masked Sith lord with a temper.
The Emp- First Order has a massive spherical superweapon that can wipe out planets called the Death St- Starkiller Base and the Resistance needs to stop them.
They formulate a plan to destroy it and one group infiltrates.
There, the old wise man gets killed by Not-Darth Vader and they have to shoot their way out after sabotaging the weapon.
A pilot goes in to destroy the weapon and succeeds, blowing it up entirely and leaving victoriously.

And to top it off, the lightsaber battles were shitty, the cinematography was jarring, there was very little of the classic camp, everything had too much impact to it, sound wise, and it overall just didn't feel like a Star Wars movie.

I don't usually post on /tv/ but I had to come here to complain about this.
I'm glad I wasn't counting on it being good, I went in with no expectations and I was still let down.

I have no problem with Han dying. I knew it was going to happen to either him or Luke since they needed to kill of one of the old cast. But the way they did it was really annoying. The way he confronted Kylo Ren was the most obvious set up to his death. From the minute you saw that they were in the same room you knew it was coming.

If they put Han's confrontation and death when Rey was being kidnapped, it would have been much better. It wouldn't have been nearly as obvious and it would have raised the emotional stakes during Finn's rescue and battle with Kylo on the Hoth Star.
