The shock was intentional, you're supposed to be sort of shocked and disappointed that he's not newvader... caus he isn't new vader. He's a chump who aspires to be a badass. His helmet kept having attention drawn to its weight, which I guess was like a kind of self imposed punishment/training thing. Like Piccolo's weighted clothing. Meant to be uncomfortable and stuff.
I hated the fight at the end though, but I just hated the two main protags overall.

I had the same opinion at first, and reading the books on Darth Bane's sith apprentice training, I would've thought Kylo Ren would be going through similar training. The sith are meant to see lightsaber duels as a dance and read any amateur counters and sequence changes. Like people have said, he was injured, he had just killed his father which was required of his sith training, he would've been mentally taking that in.
