The totally-not-a-Deathstar was so underwhelming and seemed tacked on because without a fleet of Rebels blowing up a spherical giant weapon it's not a real Star Wars movie.
The final space fight should have just been an overwhelming fleet attacking the Resistance base and make hints towards the weapon and show it under construction (without spelling out what it is).
Same with Kylo Ren, his face should not have been revealed until Han told him to take it off because he doesn't need it, his appearance should have been a mystery until the finale and the surprise of him not being deformed would have more impact.

Kylo is a good character and his character arc has a lot of promise.
He's also a pretty different villain, which is refreshing, and could make things interesting.
The only problems is that he's ugly as sin but that also kind of works all things considered.
