So far ASOIAF does a fair job at deconstructing and subverting earlier Western fantasy. GRRM basically wrote Romance of the Three Kingdoms in a Western Europe backdrop with ice zombies and the Lich King.
Nothing goes according to fairy tales and LOTR clones do. Take the Brotherhood Without Banners. They were originally a heroic band of rebel outlaws like the Merry Men, but the fact that innocent smallfolk were tortured and killed for association with them is akin to what the Whites and Reds did to peasants in the Russian Civil War. Or how they lost their way after Beric's final death which even Thoros laments. I hope Ned Dayne and his followed keep up the good fight in protecting and feeding the smallfolk.
The key lesson in this series is that nothing comes easy. Especially leadership. Jon fucked up big time by being short-sighted while Daenerys keeps messing up in Essos that she's gonna bring havoc to Westeros.
