Is there a better composer for grand and emotive scores than Hans Zimmer?

What do you think about scores?

Are they manipulative?
Do they cheapen a film?
>>
I find the whole Hans Zimmer hype rather pathetic, his scores are very similar and generic, and most other Hollywood composers do their best copying his shit. If you want unique, top tier movie composers, see Morricone, Poledouris, Trevor Jones, most of Vangelis and then of course Disney's underappreciated soundtrack king Alan Mencken.

I don't see what's fedora about giving a few suggestions to someone who's obviously a pleb when it comes to soundtracks.
>>
>>63726654
Fuck man, that's some serious issues you've got. All composers have music that sounds too damn similar if you listen to them all at once.

Does Zimmer have amazing songs? Yes. Are they different enough to deal which movie they come from? Hell yes.
That's all.

John Williams is far worse in terms of generic though he is good too (but a thief).

I like Henry Mancini and I think it's Bruce Broughton.

Hans Zimmer had a lot more variety 10+ years ago. The scores for The Lion King, Broken Arrow and the first PotC movie were very unique and different in style, but while the movies that have turned everybody into a Zimmer fanboy (mostly Inception) have good soundtracks, the style is all just exactly the same bombastic, overly emotional bullshit. But I guess that's what works these days.
>>
Depends on the kind of grand emotions you want.
I'd put Jerry Goldsmith out there, though he's less of an is and more of a was, tragically.

Knock yourself out, there's soundtracks from a shitload of movies and a lot of variety
>>
>>63727084
To be fair, I only listen to old Zimmer. I DO have the Inception and Dark Knight soundtrack (and one or two songs from Interstellar) but I don't like them as much as, as you said, Lion King or similar stuff. So I agree, his modern work are pretty.... similar.
>>
>>63727174
Actual, I have to add something. They are similar but they are still good. DEFINITELY manipulating emotions but they do it well.

But so was most of the Leon the Professional soundtrack. I think it was by Eric Seone or something. Very good.
>>
>>63727200
If it's good or not is a matter of subjectivity, but I'd prefer if there was more variety to his works rather than being a one trick pony. He used to make amazing soundtracks, now you know exactly what you get from each new movie.

John Williams is not half the composer Zimmer is.

Zimmer is legit a genius, but his most acclaimed tracks are far from his best.

Chevaliers de Sangreal is a beautiful piece wasted on a shit movie, and theres plenty of others

Only Morricone matters

I really really like David Arnold

the score for Stargate is still #1 in my book

I prefer Danny Elfman desu

Lisa Gerrard is pretty good.

What about Michael Giacchino?
>>
Han Zimmer a shit. Most of his 90s-00s scores were ghostwritten by others like Klaus Badelt. That's not to say he's a no-talent hack. But he's no great composer either.

>Hans Zimmer?

I like him, but his recent shit is bombastic and simple as fuck. John Williams is vastly superior in terms of composition and arrangement, though he robs Brahms and Mozart blind with depressing regularity. I think James Horner is my all-time favorite.

Hell, even Michael Giacchino does bombast better than Zimmer.

I give him full props for meta-creativity, though. His theme for Man of Steel was interesting in how it related to and interplayed with Williams' Superman theme, and how his theme for Inception has Non, Je Ne Regrettes Niens playing in the backround at 1/64th speed or whatever was a brilliant stylistic choice as well as perfectly related to the movie's plot
