Sounds about right. Shame it's been lost. Even main stream 90S movies like Lion King and Aladdin had the same idea.
Compare that to say Frozen or how to tame you're dragon. shallow and hands on when dealing with tragedy, suspense, etc. While great for mindless entertainment of kids, I don't think it adds to thier long time appeal. And certainly won't have as great of impact as older kids movies did.
Only real sad thing I can think of is Bing Bong dieing on screen but that was very scene specific and didn't apply to the overal plot. Unless you say of it metaphor for growing up.

This is very true. Older children's films (and even some TV cartoon series) were kind of expected to be able to also teach kids some of the serious parts of life.
I think this was done not only because it's the right thing to do, but because parents would expect their child's entertainment to have some value in teaching life lessons and painting a more complete picture of life.
