>The critics love TFA.

The critics (for the most part) are either paid-off, scared of badmouthing JJ and Disney because they don't want to be shunned by Hollywood, or are just plebs in every artistic sense.

It's very likely it's a combination of all three though.

Need I remind you these are the same idiots that called Jurassic World, Fury Road, The Martian, Interstellar and countless other capeshit movies "masterpieces."

They have no credibility.

I'm really disturbed that is where we are as a society. "It is an established franchise worth billions of dollars so just watch it and enjoy it"
>>
>>63704647
So from what I can tell a film, produced by Disney, rehashes the story of one of its predecessors yet this gets overlooked because critics are too in love with the franchise and the story has those moments that tug on 'muh feels' and 'make me feel emotional' that they heap inflated praise upon it until it's critical reception is better than films like Platoon (88%, 8.1/10), Cries and Whispers (89% 8.1/10), The Shawshank Redemption (91%, 8.2/10), The Tree of Life (84%, 8.1/10), and Drive (92%, 8.3/10).

Gee, now when has this happened before.....

People of 4chan, There is no reason that film is a disappointment that 4chan trolls said, all of critics say that episode 7 is great film, the one film that you will really hate is Alvin 4.

To be honest I question the standards of normies these days. I mean a lot of what they're enjoying is actually regurgitated crap.

This is literally a rehash of Episode IV. Nobody seems to give a shit because OMG STAR WARS!!11
>>
>>63705108
If the movie wasn't basically made in photoshop, with all the blatant digital splicing on display, you might have an argument.
>>
>>63705848
>To be honest I question the standards of normies these days.

The standard of the mainstream audience has always been low. It's nothing really new.

Even going to before cinema, when theater reigned as the main source of artistic entertainment. Sure Shakespeare, Miller, Beckett, Ibsen and Williams were well received - but what was even more popular was vaudeville, especially in North America.

Then you had the studio system during the early days of Hollywood, and honestly, the current state of American film-making is mimicking the studio system of old.

The problem is the current generation have been brought up on blockbusters. Coupled with the fact that they now have a shorter attention span; it's the perfect recipe for producers and studios to remake and rehash old shit, just with more explosions and shiny things to keep people interested.

It's really a sad state of affairs, but I don't see it ending anytime soon.

That's the thing, as long as the script and acting are decent, there really isn't anything wrong with loving this movie then. It's Star Wars. People love it for the music, the designs, etc. Of all the franchises out there, Star Wars really doesn't need to stray that far off into new territory, because what it already has is special.

So what you're saying is that nostalgia should come before anything else "because muh Star Wars, muh childhood?" If so, fuck off. You're one of the reasons why Star Wars is full of cancer. Stop spreading it.
>>
>>63707158
People love the clone trooper designs. People love the spacecraft designs. They love the world that's already in place. I don't care about what it did to my childhood. Just accept that Star Wars doesn't need to pull a mad max. And you're right, it is running on nostalgia, but the thing is this is the best nostalgia any movie has to offer. So why ruin that?
>>
>>63707308
There's being different with differences and then there's blatant rip off. TFA falls under the latter category. Possibly under a subcategory that reads "PC approved. Whites btfo"

I'd love to be proven wrong and get a classic Star Wars film. But is there a shred of evidence to suggest it will be a classic?

The trailer? There were some neat shots, but lots of shitty films had exciting trailers. Phantom Menace immediately springs to mind.

The writers? JJ has never written a truly great script. I'd argue the closest he came was the breddy gud script for "Regarding Henry", but that was flukey and happened decades ago.

Kasdan wrote two classic films, Empire and Raiders, but he's been in deep freeze (or a Big Chill, as it were) for decades. The last project he worked on was a Diane Keaton weepy flop called "Darling Companion".

The director? Again, JJ has done nothing new, inventive, or enduring in his career. His films have a fun pace and lots of kinetic energy, but they're merely above average for an action director. He doesn't seem to have the genius eye of Spielberg or the imagination of young Lucas.

All in all, you're basing your prediction on nothing more than hope. Which is okay I guess, because I'm hoping too... But I don't expect anything other than a nostalgic, fast-paced romp through the Star Wars universe.

If you're hoping for the magic discovery of A New Hope or the spiritual depth of Empire, I'm afraid you're likely to be disappointed.

Just go in hoping for fun, which is what I'm hoping we get after the dreary death march that was the prequel era.

The problem with TFA being the same as ANH is that if they are substantially similar, there is no justification for making a new film and telling a 'new' story. I know they just want money, but the ads refer to this as the story of a new generation of Star Wars, but this movie appears to be simply referencing the OT and explaining where the old characters are while trying to fit in new characters in the mold of old characters (Rey=Luke). If the OT tells the same story as TFA, then the OT is the clearly better of the story (it being it's own original thought) and there would be no reason to see TFA or even make the film.

This is JUST the type of rehash I was expecting, it's nothing but a glib facsimile.

If Star Wars was all I had access to as a child in terms of sci-fi I probably would become one of those crazy fanboys, but thankfully I had access to anime from very early on in my youth years that my mental balance is very stable.

Seriously, if you have watched Akira, you'd realize just how sophisticated anime is and it blows away anything Star Wars would have to offer.

A lot of people mention Ghost In The Shell, which has just enough of sexuality in the mix to draw in the western audience I suppose but I must say that Ghost In The Shell is not even in my top 10 anime, not even close, that's just how deep the world of anime is.

Some anime is so disturbingly mature like Fractale that I wish it would challenge the system and submit it as a Drama category in the Oscars just to bitchslap the snotty Academy.

It's not just the level of maturity and sophistication anime has, it's also quite original, entertaining, and visually fantastic. I would regard anime as the highest form of cinema art-form.

But hey, me preaching about anime won't do you any good, you gotta go out and see it for yourself just how much you are missing.

The recent one I would recommend to check out is Sword Art Online which is light and easy to get into anime for the first time yet appreciate it as much, but if you want the heavy stuff right off the line check out Guilty Crown in which the plot is so complex and twisted that you'll need extra oxygen pumped into your brain in order to comprehend everything, and if you want amazing visuals and a gripping drama that also has awesome mecha battles Aldnoah.Zero is the shit.

Seriously, if you know anime like I do, Star Wars looks like it's something for little kids.

pfff I remember when Episode III came out that everyone was hailing it as the 2nd best movie in the franchise, that Anakin's fall was handled in the best possible way, etc, etc and look at how that movie is regarded today
>>
>>63704647
Where were you when Abrams saved blockbuster cinema?
>>
>>63713588
So basically every new star wars movie is doomed to be shit then, right?

>bad reviews
>TOLD YOU SO

>good reviews
>GUYS REMEMBER EPISODE 1 AND 3
>>
>>63713528
Then why do you keep coming back here everyday and trying to be part of this board?

You're not as anonymous as you think

>>the writing wasn't laughably bad
It wasn't
>>the cheesiness didn't ruin the few dramatic moments
It didn't
>>the movie wasn't aesthetically generic ("omg blue and orange!!!
Now you're really reaching with the imaginary criticisms
>>
Using a third Death Star and not showing Luke is unforgivable

Because you guys entertain me. Your autism mixed with cynicism is actually amusing most of the time.

>So basically every new star wars movie is doomed to be shit then, right?

Well it's part of the disney capeshit machine now so yes, absolutely every one of them is doomed to be shit. If the writers and directors actually tried to make something that wasn't intentional mediocrity they'd be fired.
>>
>>63713375
That is really untrue. If you can't figure out why Cahiers du Cinema put mad max on their top ten then you're a pleb
>>
>>63713375
But i don't watch capeshit

What a fat cunt.

Shit, is it 2007 again?
>>

I'm just saying that it's too early to claim that /tv/ was wrong, because the initial impressions of Star Wars are always too glowing.

Also they're saying the movie is "fresh" but the descriptions of the movie don't sound enticing
>>
>>63707532
>I've never seen a Mad Max movie before.

Its a throwback you fucking mong, happens in every Mad Max film.
>>
>>63713375
If you can't understand why Mad Max was as praised as it was, you really don't understand what makes movies good in general. I'm guessing your criticism was "I was bored!" or "Nothing happened!".
>>
>>63713762
Sorry but /tv/ is wrong this time.
>>
>>63713684
Don't beat around the bush with scripted answers you chronic shitposting reject
>>
>>63713811
I haven't seen it yet but if it's as they say, a beat by beat remake of ANH, then I can already tell you that /tv/ was right.

That's even more boring than if they fucked up because the prequels, while shit, were also memorable for it.

This will be forgotten just like the Star Trek reboot.
>>
>>63704647
Of course they do. This movie has a woman as main character instead of a blonde man. Critics today are a bunch of progressives that eat that kind of stuff.
I'm not against having a woman MC, but when this is literally the same movie as 40 years ago but with a woman instead of a man and is getting high scores just because of that, then there is the problem
>>
>>63713782
>the old ones did it, so that makes it good...it's intentionally shitty

no

Even the positive reviews say it's a rehash

But it's Star Wars so who cares right?

It's down to 95% now guys.

Why is he reviewing movies now?
>>
>Is literally a rehash with minute differences
>Luke is now a woman and his name is Rey
>Tatooine is now called Jakku
>The Rebellion is now called The Resistance
>The Empire is now called the First Order
>The new Star Destroyer now destroys solar systems and not just planets
>R2-D2 is now BB-8
>Han is this movie's Ben

This movie is literally just a rehash of ANH and people are falling for it expecting some grand spectacle which has never been done before. I fully expect a shit ton of people to be massively disappointed with this movie.

TFA apologists on denial. You know it's nothing original and for star wars this is the definition of shit.

It being shitty is your opinion, but its been a running theme in all the Mad Max movies.

Are you saying you like long running series to change things that are a part of what they are ... you want starwars without space battles and lightsabers ? You want a hiest movie without hiests ?

Mad Max is known for its sped up scenes, Fury Road using them was no different than the last movies, its not shitty because you didn't like it yourself.

duhh those 3 other movies where inspired by a rela event called the conquest of mexico shit tard.
Therefore none of those movies can say they are copies of each other.

Phantom Menace did in fact get quite a lot of good reviews at first by supposedly respected movie critics

It is. It was only after the inertia settled that the afterglow turned into contempt.
