How can it be fresh if it's just a rehash of episode 4?
It'll be around 60-70% like the LOTR prequels, because critics will be bullied by the desire to appeal to nostalgic fans but let down by the actual flick. So I'm not only predicting the rating for this Star Wars movie, but the rest as well.
Everyone knows if it was up to anyone, the LOTR prequels would be 10% shit.

It's Disney franchise pandering. It either hits or set up every beat in the original trilogy.
Imagine someone said to JJ. I want you to recreate A New Hope knowing you were going to make Empire directly after. Make it appeal to the biggest audience you can and don't worry about tying things up or explaining anything because we can flush that stuff out in the next 500 Star Wars movies we make.
Will critics eat it up? Maybe they loved weirder shit. Will you like it? Maybe depends on what you want to get out of a new Star Wars movie.

Honestly I'd give it a positive review because of the score. Seriously I could watch paint dry to the Star Wars music and I would probably enjoy it.

I don't think there's much direct collusion but critics obviously can't write what they think. If 100% perfect is really what the critics think then they probably shouldn't be critics.
I think it's more of a herd mentality where nobody's willing to make a bold move out of fear of the consequences, and there are most certainly consequences. Armond White is ostracized and slandered among these people for his contrarian views.

I don't think you understand the incredibly central role romance has is dramatizing a story's themes and adding different kinds of conflict.
one of the reasons classic movies are classics is because they didn't attempt to fill their whole running time with one type of sequence. ESB has a romance. eh, I shouldn't have to explain this shit to you.
