The aesthetic of the Star Trek movies from II to VII ought to go down as the best in the history of sci-fi film.

>>
>>63693327
Well it uses many of the same components of the galaxy class, so I'm sure that streamlines the supply chain.

Its seems to be roughly the same tonnage, but seems to be geared to more mission specific work, while the galaxy class seems to be more of a generalist type ship.

I don't like the sleekness of that one.

I like how the TV one had a stardrive section like a torpedo with wings.

It took into itself the charm of the Galaxy class.
That is, it's unexpectedly unorthodox until you really sit down and appreciate it.

You want sloping curves and narrowing points. But denying that has its own value.

Sovereign class a fucking shit.

The Galaxy had class.
Maybe it looked bloated, but it wasn't compromising.

The Sovereign talks shit and gets all up in your face about her design.
She's a hotrod.

The Galaxy is big and confident.
She doesn't give a shit about boasting, but if you fuck with her, she'll lay you the fuck down.

That's the point. The TV version takes an odd swerve off the design evolution road, especially with the secondary hull that doesnt look like an advancement on the Excelsior refit and doesnt look like a step before the Enterprise-D hull

But that's more realistic.
You can see both B and D in the Ambassador, but also see a different idea.
The past doesn't have foresight.
It looks weird to us because we know what the ultimate Galaxy class will look like, but assuming the point of view of the Ambassador designers, they don't know that, so there's bound to be some weird angle and rough edges.

But I kinda liked that.

The whole point of the Prophets/Wormhole Aliens, is that they don't see time linearly.

So Siskso convincing the Prophets to value Bajor then meant they valued Bajor in the past and future.

The Bajorans were full of stories about how the Prophets saved them. That moment was the time when Sisko made that happen.

Yeah, everything went wrong on that show, even before it started. Berman wanted to take a year off after Voyager, then UPN told him they were doing another Trek show, right away, with him or without him. And since a dying Roddenberry had entrusted the franchise specifically to him, he said FUCK and started sketching ideas for a prequel

They wanted the first season to be set on Earth, and be about building the ship and getting the crew together, and the politics of starting Starfleet. That could've been interesting. UPN said LOL BORING JUST DO THE NORMAL STUFF MAIDEN VOYAGE BRO

Then the whole ship design, it was originally supposed to look like this, UPN said NO NEEDS TO HAVE A SAUCER AND LOOK LIKE THE OTHER SHIPS, and they tried for months to come up with a good design before running out of time and getting Drexler to restyle the Akira as a desperation move

Then, as ratings fell, the interference from the network got even worse and worse. UPN/CW wanted them to have hot bands of the day come on the show and play, because that worked on all their other programming (that wasn't set on a goddamn spaceship in the future).

And then they wrote a 7-year arc for the main characters that basically had them being clueless idiots in the first couple years who grow into the archetypical Starfleet crew, which basically meant the first couple years were awful

Also choosing bad guys named the Suliban, then right before the series premiere the Taliban and AQ do 9/11

Also their theme song (Wherever You Will Go by The Calling) got stolen by WB after they'd already finished the intro sequence that was set to it, and they had to scramble for a song that fit the meter, which is how we ended up with Faith Of The Heart

Me I like the Reliant, It's classic, stout, a warship in all but name.

Every time it swings into view in the wrath of Khan it feels menacing. It has been in use by starfleet longer than any other class of starship. While the enterprise is elegant, almost birdlike the reliant is a short little bulldog of a ship.

DS( reused the footage of those same two Mirandas flying in formation with the defiant and exploding so many times. It was just lazy reuse of effects shots.

I swear "plot armor" is unbelievably effective in startrek. these huge powerful ships explode when someone so much as farts in their direction, while whatever ship the main characters are on gets a blow by blow countdown of the percentage of plotarmor they have left.

I really like Wrath of Khan so much more now because of the horrible "THE SHIP THAT FACES OFF AGAINST THE ENTERPRISE IN EACH MOVIE MUST BE A SUPER ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION MACHINE" trope that they have shoved into every Trek movie thae past 20 years.

The Reliant was a Federation ship that had slightly more firepower than the Refit, and that made it so much more realistic and interesting.

Now there is THE MASSIVE USS VEANGANCE, and SHINZON'S MASSIVE SHIP WITH 900 DISRUPTOR BANKS, and NERO'S MASSIVE MINING SHIP THAT CAN DESTROY FLEETS OF SHIPS

Incorrect.

The Reliant has forward and aft torpedoes, enterprise has forward only.

The roll-bar phasers of the reliant are classed as some kind of turbo phaser (i cant remember the terminology they used basically they feed directly off the warp core or something and are more powerful)

The Saucer section is intigrated into the engineering section, again unlike enterprise that separates them.

The Nacelles are the same, wich seems to be a running theme in each era of trek that nacelle design is similar.

If the Miranda and Constitution are both equally capable and the Miranda gets the same job done while taking up less space that would make it a more advanced ship.

the enterprise dukes it out with the scimitar for like 30 minutes, and even though it never had a chance of winning standing up, it's not even close to the narada trashing the entire federation fleet in 2 minutes or the vengeance blowing the enterprise up in 30 seconds.

besides the enterprise E beats the scimitar because the remans skimped on armor

I loved that in Wrath.. Here is a ship that is normally "no match for poor enterprise" that brings Kirk to tears. And when they are both crippled and damaged they are fighting on a roughly even field. Each blow in their fight is deadly, people are going to die, one lucky torpedo or phaser shot could be the end of either of them.

in the later films and JJ-trek we already know that the massive badguy ship is going to wreck shop until the crew finds some clever way to beat them. At this point it's a foregone conclusion.

Shields were never really consistent on all of Trek.

Sometimes they were a hull-stuck flicker when shit happened.
Other times they were full bubbles.

DS9 really ruined it by going back to the hull hugging design.

I could buy that TNG time and on that shields were whole bubbles, but DS9 ruined that by returning to the tight shields

DS9 returned to hull hugging. Weapons glared against shielded hulls.

VOY went back to bubbles again, like TNG.

There was some logical sense to the way Starfleet ships were designed. well "rules" any way that Gene laid out.

Basically that the central disk section was a sort of centralized hub with many decks sort of like an old Greek city. with the bridge in the center. the 2 nacelle or paired nacelle rule which was later broken for variety. And the engine room and engineering, separate from the living quarters.

JJtrek kind of fucks up the aesthetic by making the engine room look like a brewery and those sceens visually don't match the rest of the ship so they look like they are happening somewhere else.
>>
>>63696179
>bridge MUST be on top of the ship

DS9 had bubble shields but defiant had ablative armor so fire struck right on the hull. But yeah it was wicked inconsistent. Nemesis went back to hull hugging shields too.

Maybe the hull hugging design became used for the war because trek ships fight in retard close formations and Voyager was in essence a ship not outfitted for the domnion war lost in the backwoods of space.

Visually the magic bubble shields are a lit less dramatic and more obvious plot armor than seeing weapons beating on the hull and scarring metal.

PS: Fuck shields get money.

This.
I can get his ideas.
Like, the engine room should look like... an engine room.

But this is Star Trek.
This is the future.

Engine rooms should look like memories of modern engine rooms.

TOS did it right, TNG did it further.

By making the movies' engine rooms look like industrial plants, JJ lost a lot of the charm of the source material

You're all right, What took me out of it the most was that the scenes just don't look like they are happening on the same ship. It is a total visual dissimilarity that just makes you loose your train of thought.

Like in Inside out, the dinner scene where we are jump cutting between 3 people's heads and the "real world" every set immediately lets you know where it belongs in the order of things. When they cut from the bridge to the engine room in JJtrek you're eye is instantly distracted and you subconsciously start wondering how they fit a warehouse in a spaceship.

its the directors jobs to make sure that their writing translates over to the effects teams, or that he make changes that he wants

is the shuttlebay to blame on the writers or the director or the effects team, who the hell knows. the fact that no one caught it means at the very least the director and effects team are to blame

the other scale issues have to do with the absolutely massive wrecked saucer the enterprise almost crashes into, the fact that the massive size means that roughly only every other deck has windows, the size of the workers you can see building it at its... shipyard, the massive size of the engineering bay, and things like the enormous open-air column thing from the sequel, and probably other things i forgot

>In Season 1 we hear Londo talk about his prophetic dream about him and G'Kar killing each other when they're old
>In Season 2 we see the dream
>In Season 3 we see it happen but in a new context
>In Season 4-5 we see their relationship and situation evolve to set up where it it will happen

Every single show these days is serialized. Why is B5 one of the few (only?) that was planned out ahead of time so you can have satifsfying plot lines like that?
>>
>>63696717
Alfred Bester was based, yes I admit.
Londo and G'Kar was based as fuck, until shitty writing made them together.
The show was at its best when G'Kar and Londo were in that elevator dying of smoke.
G'kar just laughing at Londo when he knew that Londo would die of "natural" causes and so would leave his people free from repercussions.

That was based as fuck. But after that, it turned to some "Lomdo and G'kar (aka space-Jesus) team up" shit.

B5 went on too long. They got too much lore in the way.

Can't hate Ivanova though. She's my gay waifu

"Writers have no sense of scale" is quoting a trope.

It is a blanket statement meant that the majority of the time the people in charge of planning and making the visuals are not knowledgeable on the scale of the environments they are in. More often they are concerned with a shot being visually impressive than if all the sizes add up right. Because in today's fast cut action scenes you don't have time to process it right away, or at least not the first time you see it.

Back when I was watching TNG in it's broadcast days and they pulled one of those fucked up scale shots of the birds of prey and the enterprise D it was on screen so long that i had time to think "Well fuck me that's not right."

Here, have some Oberth-prise

It wasn't planned ahead, Jesus.

It was just as faked as Lost, but B5 managed to make it seem like it was planned.

Yeah, Londo was meant to end up as an evil Emperor but they retconned hat like twice with his evil parasite, that was never really fully actualized.

And then there was the sudden end to the Shadows.
The whole point was that the opposed the "Light" side of the ancient aliens.
But yeah, they decide to go alongside the good ancients.
I was hoping they'd betray the rest and pretend to go along, but they honestly did.

B5 lore is shit.
Sinclair was based. But once Tron steps in, it's shit

i know what tv tropes is, thanks

and that trope specifically refers to scifi writers not understanding the distance between stellar objects or the size/mass/volume of those objects

you can derive from this a lack of understanding on effective ranges of weapon types in space, or how easily it is to detect things in space

not understanding how to properly scale different parts of your ship to actually conform to each other, even remotely, has nothing to do with it and is simply straight up inept retardation or unabashed apathy

though orci, kurtzman, and lindelof definitely have no fucking sense of scale either
>transporters go all the way to another star system, let alone the klingon homeworld
>enterprise travels from quonos to earth in like 3 minutes
>enterprise gets blasted out of warp like 200,000km from earth

Or just
>Starships are in visible range when they fire on each other
>>
>>63696972

>klingon border is 75,000km away from the kelvin
>scotty says transporters only work on a grapefruit sized object for about 100 miles, even though humans are blatantly transported farther earlier in the film
>supernova threatens to destroy the galaxy
>enterprise falls from the moon into the atmosphere in two minutes

the writers must have failed physics

It still ends with G'kar Strangling Londo to death.

I really loved that story. At episode 1 the Centari are a defeated humbled empire, their former slaves now laughing in their faces and taking territory from them and the Centari (imperial french) empire won't do shit about it. Londo is a drunk, he is marooned on a diplomatic position to get rid of him.. so he gets pissed off, he plots and maneuvers.. He is about to Trump the shit out of the Centari republic. And all it costs him is a deal with the devil. the woman he truly loved, becoming the face of a second genocide of the narn, murdering a insane dictator, and becoming ruler of his people. Only to have to learn the truth, that he will be corrupted, that he has to drink himself into a stupor in order to hope to have control, all that he fought for, all that he schemed to avoid, How Proud he was to have beaten all the odds. Now in his final hours he has to call on the Friend who was his most venomous enemy to kill him.

this is just a disconnect between visuals and actual dialogue. frequently weapon range is stated as like thousands of kms in TNG or TOS. but combat at these ranges is pretty fucking dull, ever for star trek
>>
>>63697031

the other explanation is that all the weapons we see move pretty slow and the ships are both pretty fast and agile

at non-visual ranges, ships simply have too much time to change direction or speed to avoid a shot. i mean at, say 1,000km, you only have to alter your course by like seconds of a degree to totally avoid the shot

But I like it better when G'kar strangles Londo out of hate.
In the later continuity, he strangle Londo out of compassion and freedom.

I like Londo failing, but G'kar shouldn't recognize that failure. He should kill Londo out of his crimes against his people. Not for some greater good.

The major story beats were all written out in advance. the network being wonky with the renew or cancellation forced JMS to condense the stories for season 4 and 5 into season 4.

While there is some great stuff in season 5 I think it would have been served better to have stretched the end of the shadow war and given the earth civil war more breathing room then ended it there.

Heres what I dont get about the federation. Is there some canon lore that states why the ships used are primarily human designed and built? I mean why dont we see Andoran or Vulcan ships play a similar roll as the ships shown in star trek?

Because
HUMANS ARE SUPERIOR

Humans are inferior beings-- they naturally tend toward violence and ignorance

I always figured it was a standardization thing, like maybe they sent a few transfer officers/cadets on a Vulcan ship and they got hella disoriented. (Head canon I guess) still would be kickass to see one of these in star fleet grey and blue.

Humans get shit done?

Seriously though, if the federation shipyards are run by humans, man we can build shit. You can say we have a knack for construction and in a post scarcity environment what makes you think we would stop?

Also, might be that human ships are the cheapest to make, seeing how fragile they seem to be unless there is a main character on them. So like every other military they are made by the lowest bidder.

The Federation is separate from each Planet's militia.

Earth is the exception. We only have the Feds.
But each other species operates their own spaceforce in conjunction to Starfleet

Nova class is my favorite Federation ship but my favorite overall is the Klingon Bird of Prey.
>>
>>63697728
Fun fact, as I'm sure you know, but in the original script the BoP was a Romulan ship.

Funny how the most iconic Klingon ship began as another species ship
>>
>>63697759

looked essentially nothing alike beyond having 'wings'
>>
>>63697728

I'd like the bird of prey more, but apparently klingon ship design is just taking the bird of prey and running it through the photocopier at 2x, 5x, and 10x to get different ship classes.

Why are Eve ships so fucking ugly? Honestly, I just hate their aesthetics, they're so bulbous and shitty looking.
