Doctor Who General- /who/

We finally get around to having a War Doctor edition

Yeah but from what I've seen most of their other stuff isn't selling anywhere near that hard. The Doctor Who Level Pack is going for more than any other Lego Dimensions set.

capaldi wanted to bend time and space so he could save his friend and have adventures, TLV wanted to bend time and space to match a certain version of history according to his own opinions and moral standards. TLV is a higher thinker. TLV is what the Doctor becomes when he's no longer just the idiot in a box, when he realises his true ability and surpasses Rassilon and Omega as the founder of a New Time Lord society, all under his hand.

The doctor will never go Time Lord Victorious under Moffat's reign because he can't write it. It'll be a wacky adventure, a paradox will happen, he'll name a girl something dumb again like 'the star girl who dreamt" or some shit. Then a paradox will happen star girl is super special and dreams everything right again. The doctor takes out his guitar and performs a rockshow. The end. Fuck moffat.

I just found this.

https://youtu.be/DNEjx6XUbfQ
>>
>>63659153
the last serial was written in 3 days
>>
>>63659182
It shows
>>
>>63659222
>“Normally you have about five or six months to set up and do preparation on a series with, usually, a few unused stories in the cupboard. We had nothing. The Invasion of Time came about because the original script for that slot came in right up against the deadline. And when it did come in, it proved to be unworkable. It just could not be done. There were things in it, I remember, like an amphitheatre the size of Wembley Stadium filled with killer cats in the audience. So that story went out of the window, leaving us just five days to write three hours of television. I don’t think either Anthony Read or I went to bed for three days solid.
>>
>>63659248
I'm entirely convinced David Weir was engaging in some kind of scriptwriting form of trolling.
>>
>>63658656

Those were just pitch illustrations made by the Lego Ideas member that submitted the project. His intention was always to have either Rose and Ten, or the current Doctor which would be more likely for marketing and licensing reasons.

Purple jacket was Eleven's worst costume, and it sucks since you have to buy the Lego Dimensions set to get Capaldi's actual suit.

>>
So since we are already one incarnation past when it was supposed to occur.. Where the hell is the Valeyard?
>>
>>63661945
Ah what a sweet guy
>>63661952
6 killed him. A couple of times
>>
>>63662060
But he was supposed to be created when the last regeneration found a way to use more regenerations. Since '11' cheated absolute death, shouldn't that event have created him?
>>
>>63662141
Masters line was at some point between your 11th and final regeneration. Gives them wiggle room.

VNA said that the hatred 6 felt in the doctors mind for 7 "killing" is what tured into the valeyard.

In Time's champion the valeyard was created by death to serve as it's champion since "she" felt that the doctor was too pure to be a proper champion.

I don't recall since I was o busy being disappointed did they give Valeyard an origin in Last adventre?

Personally i like the idea that the valeyard was 10 during his time lord victorious phase. His so much more speech was him realizing how close he was to the edge and agreeing to spare Wilf was his way of stepping back. Since he had meet the valeyard he was able to resist the urge to be come him blah blah blah fan wank.
>>
>>63662308
I think in the audios it was implied 11 created him while stuck on Trenzalore when trying to extend his life.

There was also a theory that metacrisis 10 could become evil because he was "born in battle" or something, and because he can't regenerate he would try to steal regenerations from the Doctor. (I guess he would even fit as the 'real' hybrid'
>>
>>63661945

even in this 1.5 minute thing while his intentions are definitely in the right place it's clear he doesn't care much about doctor who or really understand it even

I wonder if capaldi gave him a stern talking to which made him do it
>>
>>63662402
Don't recall that, interesting. Yeah the metacrisis is the obvious choice, he's even called that in the forgotten comic (but it was all a dream...)
>>
>>63662426
Eccleston always did it for the kids. He would definitely do this for a kid in the hospital. He doesn't like some people working on the show, but the whole reason he did the show in the first place is because he wanted to do something for kids.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20wJoBGL5YQ

>>63662566

I honestly feel a bit bad for eccleston, he must be so sick of getting the 'why did you leave' question

Yes but at the same time look at that clip. It was 2 minutes long and 1:55 of it was him dancing round the question and then giving a lame 2 lines cop out. If he would just say what happened he'd be done with it but all we get are vague illusions to events. Hell there are 5 different stories about why he turned down the 50th...

People hate mysteries. He should have said what happened and moved on...
>>
>>63662402
>I think in the audios it was implied 11 created him while stuck on Trenzalore when trying to extend his life.

No it wasn't.

He really does love kids, there was something posted some time ago where a kid approached him and asked if he'll ever do another episode and he promised he would come back if that kid wrote it.

>>63662712
Too many to count. When I first did them I kept them all in one folder, but when I had a hard drive failure I had to snag them off the archive in no particular order. Now whenever I make new ones I don't bother organizing them anymore so I have a shit ton somewhere.

It'd have been good if we could have archived it on the /who/ wiki

So what you're saying is we have to find this kid, groom him to become a writer for the show, and then have him do the next anniversary special? Well I do appreciate a challenge.
>>
>>63662308

The Last Adventure had a CIA agent state that the Valeyard was a top secret black project created by the CIA based off Gallifrey's most infamous renegade - the Doctor. They would give the Valeyard the Doctor's regenerations and he would act as their agent to control Gallifrey and time.

However, it was later revealed that this agent was the Valeyard in disguise, so it's probably all nonsense.

Trial of the Valeyard has him state during the Doctor's final regeneration he spent a long period alone and in an attempt to gain more regenerations, he created another being - the Valeyard. Again, this was probably a lie told by the Valeyard to the court.
>>
>>63663627
Thats right I remeber now.

And the trial story was all part of a trap for the doctor so it was most definitely made up

>>
>>63664240
It is kinda sad to see all the recon/animated episode news and intrest is kinda dead now. BBCs not doing anymore animated episodes (I still think they could turn a nice profit on color remakes of the dalek episodes) Every episode had been slide showed already.

haven't even heard any crazy lost episode rumors in like a year.

I don't watch DW for sexiness and certainly not for sexualization of old people. Old people are gross.

Are we ever gonna get another TARDIS episode?

And before you start, the fact she can't talk is irrelevant. It's not hard to figure something out.
>>
>>63670231
Edge of Destruction, Doctor's Wife, and Journey to the Center of the TARDIS?
>>
Hey /who/. Two episodes into the war doctor set so far. Really good. I kind of wish they gave the war doctor more action, as the side characters they give all the action to are cunts, but I love how they're going really heavily into the idea of the compromises the time lords are willing to make in the name of "peace". It kind of shows how there never was a "right" side to the time war when the time lords are willing to commit atrocities themselves and bring it all to an end. Hurt's doctor is pretty great too. Sarcastic and angry grandpa still, but with more time to get into the characterization and star it's easier to handle him being a hero. He can be a dick because he needs to be that to be able to make choices that morally hurt him the most. Its like john hurt playing the doctor who's playing a monster, only the doctor isn't a very good actor while john hurt is; which actually makes a lot of sense.
>>
>>63670337
Castrovalva?
>>
>>63670337
Exactly. Through over 50 years, she's only had those three. Yeah, she gets a story or two in EU stuff, but almost nothing in the main series.

You'd think an nigh-infinitely expansive sapient time machine who's mind exists in all points in time and space simultaneously would be a good well for stories, but apparently not. It's almost surreal how the only writer who was interested in fleshing her out as a character was Neil Gaiman of all people.
>>
>>63670556
It can't be more interesting then its destinations, otherwise, why leave?
>>

Yeah, that is the kind of thing. The same way Time Lords are mostly obscured and are better this way. Or time war.

It's something better left for imagination and not interefering with general storytelling.

There is an argument to be made that it works in the context of mythology arcs. An argument of whether a mythology arc is good or not is important though
>>
>Clara now heads to the door. We realise - it's the same restaurant where they parted ways in Death in Heaven. The Doctor doesn't even look at her, not knowing who she is. She opens the door, and holds it with her hand. She's got a last thing to say. "By the way, Doctor... I have a message for you"

>'If he doesn't remember her, there's no way he'd remember this, right?' she thinks. "Run. Run you clever boy, and be a Doctor". The Doctor looks at her and like an automatic answer he says "Thank you", smiling back at Clara, who looks at him one last time, tearfully saying goodbye with her eyes. And she's off. That's it. She's gone.

>The Doctor turns back, happy to have met such a good lady. But there's a spark in his mind. His smile slowly disappears, his look settles on his coffee... 'Clara...? Was this Clara?!' he remembers what she said, what Oswin and Victorian Clara said. What she said when she jumped in his time stream. It WAS Clara!

>He storms off outside, looks left and right: she's nowhere to be seen. He gears a motorbike, remembering Clara had a motorbike, and runs to an alley. There, Clara is on her bike, she looks back to him a last time, smiling. "Clara!" the Doctor says and she drives off.

>"Clara...!" he says, but she's already gone now, and soon she leaves the alley and his sight. He turns back, half happy and half sad and sees - Clara's last gift. His TARDIS!

Here's the story short:

Time Lords send out a bounty on the Doctor, Clara and Missy's heads in the opener without anyone in the universe knowing it's them. The Doctor, Clara and Missy travel together for the whole series, hearing about a hybrid while being researched by the entire universe because of the bounty. In the closing moments of episode 11, the Doctor learns it's the Time Lords who sent out the bounty and the three get teleported to Gallifrey. In the finale, we learn the Time Lords sent out the bounty so someone would capture the Doctor and get him back on Gallifrey so he can help them find and stop the hybrid, who is thought to soon destroy Gallifrey and stand in its ruins. After a game of Rassilon Roulette, they go and meet with the Matrix. In an unexpected twist, it's revealed The Doctor and Clara are the hybrid, their relationship is somehow toxic to the universe and the Time Lords want to get rid of one of them so the hybrid doesn't happen and Gallifrey is kept safe. They aim to kill Clara which is much easier to get rid of than the Doctor. Cue 20 minutes running around Gallifrey, escaping Gallifrey's armies. They both try to escape in an old TARDIS but the Time Lords chronolock it and Clara and the Doctor are stuck with a choice: The Doctor stays on Gallifrey and Clara is sent back on Earth or one of them gets their memories erased.

I just finished it.
The Innocent definitely drags a bit. Voice acting of the supporting cast sounds a little weak and the plot jumps around a little disjointedly.
It picks up somewhat in The Thousand Worlds, and The Heart of the Battle is fairly decent.
Still not quite as grand in scope as I was hoping for, though.
In the end they talk a lot about how WarDoc is really a monster of war who will do what atrocities need to be done, but they don't go far enough to justify why he was totally disowned by the subsequent Doctors.

I think the problem is the Han Solo conundrum: the closer the writers get to crossing the point of no return, the more difficult it is for anyone to believe he's still redeemable(why lucas didnt want han shooting first)

But i gotta ask, its heavily implied that the doctor blew up a bunch of daleks hiding behind children in his war trauma nightmares and it hadnt been as final a solution as he had hoped. Is that not enough to be disowned?

I wouldn't say it was funny, the tank, the sunnies and the guitar were cringe. But each to their own. See, The Impossible Astronaut/Day of the Moon balanced fun and dark perfectly.

>>63674468
You're right. That's why Series 9 was a failure whereas Series 6 kinda worked because the resolution was quite silly "a Doctor in a Doctor suit!". Series 9 took itself too seriously.

>>63674479
I agree. That's why I think there should be consequences at some point and some dark episodes. Series 4 and 5 managed that perfectly and 6 too in a way, but it was seriously let down by a disappointing arc.

Did anyone else skip all of the episodes set in Victorian times on their first time watching through the series?

I mean I have seen them all by now and lots are great, but I have a visceral distaste for stuff set in Victorian times, I can't imagine I am alone out there on this.
>>
All through Only the Monstrous I was expecting them to reveal that the Talyans hated and wanted to enslave and exterminate the Keskans was because the Keskans had used them as a race of disposable lab rats and experimental subjects, and they rose up to destroy them in revenge. You know, with the hints about the Keskans being scientists and engineers and the Talyans being technologically far behind them.

But no, it never came. Instead they're just your usual generic genocidal maniacs who get played by the Daleks like idiots.

WarDoc didn't really do anything monstrous either, at best he just assisted in a heroic sacrifice.
>>
>>63674074
Its hard to balance though. In 3 stories they still have this giant gap to convey from night of the doctor all the way to the beginning of the box set the atrocities of the time war. Arguably without a box set of the early war doctor the only way to do that is to have an entire box of flashbacks. And not only that but they have the entire war to set up as well. The second episode of which I felt did a good job of bringing about the expectation of the time lords being douchebags.

However, I do think there's an interesting concept the box set brings up:the eighth doctor helped where he could around the fringes, the war doctor helps where he wants. Thats a good bit of clever characterization, because it establishes him as not under the time lords control and thus very doctor-y

K-9's ears are wrong and he doesn't have the gunbarrel nose.
>>
>>63674635
No but I got sick of the Victorian era after Deep Breath. I'm glad we haven't returned there yet. But bring the Paternoster to the modern era.
>>
>>63674635
I've never heard of a distaste for a specific era.
although I would prefer to see other eras more, glad we got a viking and higheywayman episode
>>
>>63673579
The reason he was disowned was hat he destroyed Gallifrey, or at least that's what the Doctor thought until The Day of the Doctor.
Simple as that.
>>
It's when Doctor Who tries to take itself too seriously and goes full ape shit that it fails. That's why Series 9 and 3 failed and 6 too, to a lesser degree.

5 > 4 > 7 > 8 > 6 > 1 > 9 > 3 > 2
>>
>>63674769
>It's when Doctor Who tries to take itself too seriously and goes full ape shit that it fails.
>Series 2 at the bottom
>Series 8 near the top
I agree that 8 is one of the best and 2 the worst, but the former definitely takes itself seriously for the most part, while the latter doesn't.
That ranking doesn't really support your argument.
>>
>>63674769
>It's when Doctor Who tries to take itself too seriously and goes full ape shit that it fails
No, it fails when they dinnae write the episodes good.
If Series 3 had 'taken itself too seriously' it would still have been shit but we might at least have been spared Dobby and Tinkerbell.

Stop with all these retarded 'Doctor Who must be like ___' declarations, you'd think after 52 years we'd have got the fucking picture that
>>
>>63674769
But all the best episodes of NuWho are the darker or more serious episodes.
>>
>>63674635
My favorite story is The Talons of Weng-Chiang, so I have nothing at all against the era.

I am getting a bit sick of it in NuWho though, especially since it's pretty much guaranteed screentime for those obnoxious Paternoster cunts.
>>
>>63674645
I was actually waiting in the first story for a GOAT twist about the Talyans being Thals and the Keskans originally calling themselves Dals before running away from their war and the doctor having a moral dilemma of helping them. But they played it pretty safe in this first box.
>>
>>63674919
We haven't seen it in almost 2 series
>>
>>63674769
It's not serious vs silly, it's just arcs or themes usually suck and awkwardly and obtrusively loom over plots.

It worked at the time, but if you did that now I guarantee you everyone would just moan about it trying too hard. People's expectations have changed, you don't need to go 'Look at all these pop things you recognise, aren't we relevant? Trinny and Susannah! The Weakest Link!' in 2015.

It was in a totally canon comic.
10 saw himself in an alternate future where he decides to ditch Wilf and let him die in the radiation instead. It then skips forward a few years where 10 is basically the Frieza of the Doctor Who universe

Moffat is pretty good at it, but I think he felt the backlash from things being too samey (he even said as much in an interview), so he's dialed back on that for the last two series. Christmas episode sounds like he's gonna cut loose though, which is cool.

>I asked earlier whether the first War Doctor story could really live up to years’ worth of expectations placed upon it. I can safely say that it not only lived up to but in fact also exceeded them. A well written science-fiction war epic, featuring incredible performances and a great way of exploring a briefly seen Doctor like never before. ‘Only the Monstrous’ just might be one of the very best releases given to us by Big Finish all year, and with such strong releases like ‘Dark Eyes 4’ and ‘The Sixth Doctor: The Last Adventure’, I do not say that lightly. Highly recommend for any Whovian.
