Because of just that, it doesn't try to take it self too seriously. It's treated like a fairy tale. Of the 7 Batman movies, it looks the best. Great cinematography, art direction and production value.
>>
Batman Returns is the closest capeshit got to "FILM" or independent art house shit.

I bet Warner Bros. freaked when they saw it for the first time. "We let Burton do THIS for our summer blockbuster with this budget?!?" Probably the only capeshit without studio interference.

Yea this, Burton knew this shit was fantasy so he framed it all like a fantasy. Nolan thinks it should be played realistically which is why gonzo shit like Bane / CIA are so jarring and silly.
At the same time though he also tried to delve just a bit into Batman's mind and what could make a guy like this tick and how he sees reality. Gotham might be apeshit because the world through Wayne's eyes is distorted and freakish.

Here's a good read:

I never even got to see Batman interact with Penguin or see that sexy bitch Catwoman. Then my friends told me that later in the movie you get to see Christopher Walken's fried corpse. To top it off, my mom never let me get the cool Kenner Batcave Command Center that folded into Wayne Manor/Batcave/Arctic Lair or the Batmobile. Refused to let me see the Batman movies and get the toys that following Christmas (my dad snuck me the Bruce Wayne custom coupe tho).

You can't treat capeshit as anything other than campy and tongue-in-cheek. Burton knew this.

Nolan is an autist who tried to take schlock and mesh it with a more serious tone.

Burton knew what he was doing. He had the right balance for his Batman movies.

Schumacher was a studio puppet, they forced him to make a flick about toys.

Nolan was an autistic brit that got caught up in making capeshit as earnest as can be, which is just as silly as making it as campy as it can be.

Just listen to how these two shills describe the Nolan stuff when they get to it. All they can mutter is "realism" and "real world" because of how anal Nolan was.

I watched it a few months ago, and it's definitely the best of all the ones I've seen. I'm not a huge fan of Batman (I don't know how it should look), but I was more entertained by it than by any of the Nolan ones (though I didn't see the second of his).

I don't think you can beat the penguin scene at the end. It's simultaneously comic and somehow deeply sad.

not only is it real, it's even more stupid and arrogant in context where he says what makes TDRK 'big' is that there were a lot of extras in the stadium, which Nolan claims is the most anyone has seen since the silent era despite how Gandhi in fact had more extras.
>>
>>63649921

That's what is so great about most of the film. There are so many innuendos and stuff that you don't detect as a kid. Then when you're older, you rewatch it and pick up on so much shit that you missed.

Any movie worth it's salt caters to kids and adults. It's a shame it rubbed people the wrong way and offended people for "muh darkness". I would have loved to have seen a third one by Burton.

>>
>>63650019
it's a shame we couldn't get a Burton trilogy, even though as I recall the design for the third batsuit was pretty awful and looked like skinless muscle or something.

A tiny tiny irrational part of my mind secretly wishes that since nostalgia and capeshit are popular these days WB will try to rope Burton and Keaton into doing one more with an old Batman but Burton's such a hack now and even if he wasn't the style of those two movies would not fly at all with modern capeshit audiences so it's pointless

>sticks to the story
>maybe those movies aren't actually good

The first and second Batman are movies based on a comic anon. They're adaptations and inspirations from the comic, NOT the actual comic.

Most of the criticisms directed at guys like Burton or Raimi and their capeshit movies are based on "muh canon" or trivial comic BS. They weren't making comic books, their intent wasn't to adhere to tripe, 2D stories. They sought to make movies. It's quite simple really.

http://gothamalleys.blogspot.ca/2011/01/batman-in-movies.html

As an adaptation of the character from the comics, the movies work perfectly. They're fine. In some cases, the changes were better than the comics. What is Penguin and Catwoman in those original stories? They're pretty one dimensional. What the filmmakers did was give their own take on the material, from Burton to the writers and artists. Stop being so narrow minded because of things those funny books dictated.
>>
>>63650295
So Birdman 2.
>>
>>63650157
WB would never ever let Burton make another Batman movie, even if he was still good. There's no room for creativity or risks when you're trying to build your multi-billion dollar "universe".

Studios will continue to employ safe, unimaginative guys like Abrams and Snyder to keep the shekels rolling in.

You're appealing to an autist and autists like him that have a set opinion of what a movie should be because of the children's comics that it's based on. Any variation on that is 'wrong'. They don't understand that adhering to what fans want like a blueprint only leads to an unsatisfying and forgettable end product.
>>
>>63647907
Between this and superman 78 is there any actually good cape films?

Is Marvel Movie Factory even trying
>>
>>63650566
Unsatisfying and forgettable, but profitable. That's why Snyder is a genius. He knows he doesn't even need to write a coherent plot or even film competently because the capeshit nerds WILL praise and eat up anything that references their ebic 'graphic novels', all he has to do is shove in enough visual callbacks or quotes and the dollars will come rolling in

>>
>>63650619
I think what >>63650402 said is right. They can make a pretty good movie, but they'll never make a great one. They have no vision outside of blandly making money. Why risk Burton putting in sexual innuendos every other line?
>>
>>63650019
Damon Wayne as Robin would have been "interesting"
>>
>>63650566

Dubs confirm this is true.

Look at TDKR. Selina/Catwoman in that is pretty much comic accurate I would say. They made her the catburglar, thief she was in the comics. She's fucking boring though. They had a chance to really make that character shine but instead, she just blended in with the other secondary characters. What's the most interesting thing about her? That stupid clean slate USB that's been done to death in comics and capeshit movies to death?

With Returns, it had a theme. They took this "animal people" concept and applied it to three different personas that represent Batman. The approach did something new and interesting with it instead of retreading new ground. People praise that Pfeiffer Catwoman, not because it's "comic accurate" but because it's fresh and exciting with a great, layered performance.

What these comic guys don't take into account is that, even the fucking comics are inconsistent with the characters and stories! All those fucking universes, the different versions, who gives a shit? Tell the story and make the movie you want to tell.
>>
>>63650803
That's what makes me laugh the most about comic autists. The characters within those shitty stories aren't even consistent from one issue to the next much less across decades.
>>
>>63650670
Capeshit offers a weird brand loyalty for studios that other sources don't possess. For a fanboy, the cape being the correct colour makes the movie good. Actually making a good movie is secondary.

You unironically get grown men aligning themselves with movie studios in flame wars against other studios that are producing different capeshit.
>>
World building is so important in getting an audience to accept the ridiculous shit on screen. It's why Batman Begins seems to suit the capeshit sub genre far better than TDK or TDKR. Nolan seemed to put a bit of effort into creating his Gotham. The city in BB didn't just feel like a Chicago stand in.
>>
>>63651389
yeah after that he got so fucking arrogant and lazy Gotham was just Chicago. No imagination, no style, no fucking effort whatsoever. Seriously when I think of TDK and especially TDKR all I can think of are headache inducing graytone environments. I honestly think the fucking plane scene as the most color in TDKR.
