Okay, so a lot of miss information about Malachor is going on right now so let's just make this clear:
IF Kotor, Kotor 2 and TOR are canon, then Malachor happened before BOTH of them. Kotor 2 takes place a few years after Kotor 1, and Malachor's events took place a few years before Kotor 1.
Malachor is basically the location of the battle that is attributed to Revan forsaking the light side. He and his apprentice discovered here the first clue that would lead them to the hidden Sith Empire, make them confront the Emperor and then return to find the Star Maps and fire up the Star Forge.
Malachor is where they effectively obliterated the mandalorians.
