How did a film this magnificently epic get such shitty reviews? I thought it was one of the best of the yr damn it.

when i saw the trailer for this I was quite excited for this, until I saw Ron Howard

no possible way it could have been good
>>
>>63622333
Stick to watching Joe Sweden movies. Howard knows what he's doing.
>>
>>63622261

the blue green instagram filter probably annoyed the critics too much so they nitpicked everything else. Who gives a shit if Chris Hemsworth cant do an american accent? Who gives a shit if the whale isn't in the movie that much? It's about what happened.

it was good. not great but not bad. just good

I couldn't find anything about the film. The fellow in OP's picture, is his name Max Resdefault? Sounds French. Is it a French film?

>Who gives a shit if the whale isn't in the movie that much?

Critics complained about that?

Jesus fucking christ what idiots. I guess Jaws and Alien were bad movies that didn't show the monster enough. Also there weren't enough sploshions.

I wanted this to be good. They even delayed the release of the film so it could come out during award season. Chris is a great actor; he needs prestigious films under his belt. Rush was a really good movie too. How did Ron Howard shit the bed with this.
>>
go look on rottentomatoes. the people who dislike it are all women who are incapable of understanding its themes of honor and masculinity and brotherhood. and total beta kekold liberal sissy men. This is a real film for real men.
>>
It was pretty good. Watched it last night. I, too, was surprised at the shitty reviews and opening numbers. I blame capeshit, unironically.
>>
is it true it has a great master and commander vibe to it?
>>
>>63623158
a little bit
>>
>>63623158
yeah it does, that was part of why it's so good, finally another sea film and aint bad to boot
>>
>>63623158

This is why "critics" are hating on it. It's a story about men being men, and none of the people reviewing it are actual men, they're SJW keks with a need to be seen by womyn as caring and understanding, and a story about killing majestic sea beasts is too misogynistic.

I've actually read a review criticising the movie because the first whale they kill is female.

What the actual fuck.

>mfw the reviewer is a fat white apologist SJW
>>
I saw it with my dad. We both really liked it.
>>
>>63623879

I too enjoyed a sensible chuckle at the irony.
>>
Because the characters were pretty bland and barely held the movie.

>>63623037
>>63623318
Why say people who didn't like the movie didn't because it was "manly?" Manly based on what? The two rival captains kept arguing like petty women.
>>
I was always skeptical about the film since I first found out about it because a) the filter hurts my eyes, and, more importantly, b) they're hyping it as the story that inspired Moby-Dick, yet the film looks more fabulistic than that novel. Hardly realistic at all, and as a Melville fan and a /lit/fag it hurts me deeply. Also Ron Howard is extraordinarily hurt or miss, with none of his hits being too remarkable anyway. His best work was the creation of his daughter desu
>>
looks like a CGI shit fest. I won't even bother to see it
>>
Why didn't he throw the lance?
>>
>>63624398
RH can be pretty good when hes not tackling memes, this and Rush are epic

>>63625317
Only a man can understand this
>>
>>63625317
Because when a giant monster murderwhale escorts you to the edge of it's territory and eyeballs you untill you fuck off, the last thing you want to do is poke at it with a pointy stick.
>>
>>63625317
Mutual respect.
Don't worry, you'll become a man some day.
>>
The only thing I didnt get was the whale supposed to be Moby Dick? Is it worth reading the book
>>
>>63625602
In the actual story of the Essex Nantucket, there was no mention of the whale being white. I suppose that element was only added to this to better tie it in with the novel which was inspired by this story. Also, the whale never followed them after sinking the ship.
>>
>>63625602
>Is it worth reading the book

Yes, it most definitely is.
>>
I wanted to like this film, and overall I did but there were some faults

>Shit colour filter
>Story told through Narration, that keeps jumping back and forth
>Whales move to swiftly and nimbly under water, as if they have no weight or mass and makes them look fake
>Even the Dolphins you see, which are fast, move TOO fast when they are seen
>Very little human character building, even Chase or the Narrator has one or two memorable scenes with dialogue.
>Film is obviously about humanity learning it's true place on Earth, however this message is a little on the nose when you have the character saying it out loud that they are specks of dust on Earth.

Still though, best film I've seen this year. Had good cinematics and ideas something we know Star Wars isn't going to have.
