What the fuck do they have to do with each other? They both have "Star" in the name?
You may as well say "What do Escape From LA fans think of LA Confidential fans"

Star Trek is more science fiction, inspired more real life technology, has great world building, involves discussions about morality/ethics/politics so many gray areas, got many scientists and astronauts interested in their fields as children. There is hundreds of hours of Star Trek not even including the movies. Most of Trek is enjoyable, even at it's shittiest it's pretty watchable.

Star Wars is a fantasy blockbuster for children and is a cliche good vs evil story. Totals like 12 hours with Prequels. Half of Star Wars content is pure shit.

>I love both, I'm just old enough to be annoyed by Star Wars at this point and especially it's "casual fans."

literally the 'deepest' conversation star wars fans have ever had is whether or not a comedic side character is the grand master of the sith.

meanwhile star trek fans have actually gone on to do something with their lives and progress human discovery
>>
star trek : modern day problems in a sci fi universe

star wars : ideological universals in a sci fi universe

star trek deals with practicals, star wars deals with fundamentals

at least they try to make the distinction

Star Trek = Galaxy has chicks. Different civilizations have different politics, religion, ethics and none are overtly evil or good. Even the Federation isn't exactly "good."

Star Wars = Galaxy is mostly dudes. Good vs Evil, Space Wizards a better comparison would be LOTR and Hobbit to Star Wars, they have more in common.
>>
>>63617198

So about the ethics thing.

You and I know that "nice" planets like Earth are hard to find, and Terraforming is fucking hard, so if Mars was exactly like Earth but had a lot of wildlife, would it be right to kill all of that life and get that planet for us?
>>

>muh deep edgy dangers of technology classic sci-fi is better than optimistic fun sci-fi

I'm both a Star Wars and a Star Trek fan.

Star Wars is an epic space opera which focuses on characters and their development while being awesome and space-y

Star Trek is a blend of techno-babble and moral conundrums.

Both are good in their own way.
>>
>>63617365
This makes me appreciate that we don't have any (consistent) trips in the Trek threads

>modern day problems
More like: Classical and universal tropes such as the fountain of youth or paradise lost explored in a utopian space opera setting. Hell, even when Star Trek referenced something closer to modernity, we got something that was nostalgic to the past in a faux effort to not alienate us from its future setting, usually something that resonated with Baby Boomers.
>>
>>63617488

I've never been to Tumblr. My roommate loves it though. All I'm saying is Star Wars is for faggots. Not enough hot chicks. 2 Chicks in 6 movies is pretty bizarre.

Star Wars is more like LOTR. Retarded good vs evil plot, fantasy physics, wizards and a bunch of dudes that populate the whole universe. Half the movies are alright. EU and TV shows are pretty shit.

Star Trek is a sci fi tv series that has a lot of morally questionable elements and actually addresses philosophical questions. Even the worst series is pretty enjoyable. And about half the movies are pretty good. Most of the tv series are great.

Where is it said that it's not possible to like both?

>>63617004

Sci-fi is pulpy pewpewlaser shit like Star Wars. Science fiction is legitimate speculative fiction that delves into the human condition and our relationship with technology, like Bladerunner.
>>
>>63617688

That's the thing it's aged pretty well apart from TOS because it's always been a franchise of substance. Keep in mind Star Wars wouldn't exist without Star Trek coming first. Lucas even admitted it.

>>63617691

Star Wars fans will never admit they are retarded for liking a good vs evil children's franchise that is literally 50% shit.

>All this being said, I like Star Wars...I just liked it alot more when I was 13 years old.

Jesus Christ you impeccable moron you.
Have you ever read classic sci fi?
Full of space lords, weapons of impossible energy meeting impenetrable shields, warriors, damsels in distress.
The sci fi genre was created as a way to write mildly entertaining pulp when westerns were starting to get worn out

I like both.

But seriously Star Trek is good and Star Wars is bad.
>>
I think Star Trek is gay as fuck
>>
>>63616813

They don't have much in common at all. Star Wars is much more like LOTR. Star Wars is a blockbuster that exists to sell toys.

Star Trek is a tv show like Babylon 5, Star Gate and Farscape. Trek has movies but you don't really need to watch most of them to love the franchise.
>>
>>63616939
I like both of those, though.
>>
>>63616813

I like star wars because it's fun.

I like star trek for its episodes that address social issues.

it's like classical music vs rock and roll
>>
>>63618149

That's fine but Star Wars is gayer.

>Anakin is evil because he wanted to get laid. Literally only character in the franchise to have sex. Sexless space monks with boy apprentices are the heroes? You want me to think this shit is straight in anyway?

I'd rather watch military sci fi like Stargate, BattleStar or Trek anyday.
>>
>>63617875
I think you'd find good use for the term 'hard science fiction'.
>>
>>63617975
Pretty accurate, desu. Hardcore libkek agenda-pushing.
>>
>>63617944

The only people who "get" Star Trek are autistic people. It's full of them and the show is consistently about teaching the autistic characters how to interact with normal people. Autistics find this extremely enlightening, but it's weird and hard to watch for anyone else because of how over the top obvious everything it presents is.

If you don't believe me, just look at the evidence:
>Spock doesn't understand the point of emotions and sees things only in the cold light of logic
>Data is an android essentially filling Spock's role and he exists for the other characters to teach him how humans interact with each other
>Troi is a character whose sole usefulness is that she has the ability to understand what other people are feeling (something as basic as empathy is presented as a superpower)
>every alien species is some take on a human trait or culture and interactions with them amount to understanding their differences from the crew and using that to promote peace between the humans and aliens (autistic people can't grasp the idea that others are different from themselves and it's a trial for them to understand other peoples' perspectives in order not to butt heads with them out of frustration)

You see where this is going, I'm sure.
>>
>>63616851
This post has literally made a fedora spontaneously appear over my head
>>
Star Trek has less mainstream appeal. It's a more cerebral and thoughtful approach to science fiction.

Star Wars has more mainstream appeal. It's more action focused and has a more fantastical approach to science fiction.

Both of them are fun series.
>>
>>63617198

>>
Star wars a shit
>>
>>63618248

No, that's just further description of the science fiction genre. You can have hard or soft science fiction, but they are both as I described, it's just a matter of how in-depth they go into the science or technology behind it all.

Think of it like this: Sci-fi can be movies or flicks, while science fiction (whether hard or soft) can be film or cinema.
>>
>>63618274

How come in the Star Trek 2009 Spock is banging Uhura? How could a conversation lead to them banging?
>>
>>63618274
>troi is useful

lmao youve never watched star trek, gtfo
>>
>>63618421

Star Trek 2009 is a different thing altogether.
>>
>>63618274

Part of Star Trek is a discussion of the Other like that Quiquog dick from Moby Dick or that guy can't can't talk in Robinson Crusoe. Data and Spock are cool because they don't get humans. Star Wars is fun but there is a total of 2 women in the whole galaxy and anyone that isn't human is basically just barks or makes funny noises and doesn't contribute to any kind of discussion. Star Wars lacks humanity and doesn't teach us anything about what it means to be human. Star Trek does. I like both franchises, just one is way more thoughtful.
>>
>>63618466

I didn't say she was useful. I said her sole usefulness was empathy. As noted by the many episodes where she's called upon to sense the feelings/intentions of various alien threats. It doesn't matter if you consider her useful or necessary, but she does HAVE a use, and that use is that she has empathy as a fucking superpower.

>>
>>63618681

hahahahahahahah

>Go to bed, you have school tomorrow.
>>
>>63618635

It's possible for something to have a use and overall not be useful. In fact, saying that someone or something has only a single use could be seen as implying that thing is generally useless, especially if that one use is extremely esoteric or rare to need.
>>
>>63617198
>Star Trek is more science fiction
The sheer number of godlike beings in trek is far more ridiculous than anything in star wars. Also, technobabble deus ex machinas do not make good science fiction. The early drafts of scripts literally had "[tech]" in them as explanations for plot devices which were later filled with nonsense siencey sounding terms like "bio-electric fields" or "magnetoscopic interference" or "phase shifting".

>inspired more by real life technology
Trek technology is not realistic in the slightest. Please tell me you're not one of those people who fell for the Alcubierre Drive meme and didn't actually look the method used to produce it.

>has great world building
"Aliens" who are just humans with mild prosthetics and exaggerated meme cultures.

>involves discussions about morality/ethics/politics so many gray areas
All I remember is extreme moral pretentiousness and claims of transcending all human weakness. What gray areas are you talking about?

>Half of Star Wars content is pure shit.
I'll give you that. The EU is mostly shit and some parts are infamously bad. And Star Wars have some serious raging autists such as Wookiepedians.
>>
>>63618738

whatever you say lil buddy
>>
>>63618782

Fine, then. I was trying to find a middle ground here, but you've apparently put my foot down for me. There's no denying Troi was useful in the sense that she had a purpose on the ship. She's called upon in plenty of episodes.
>>
>>63618945
>There's no denying Troi was useful in the sense that she had a purpose on the ship.

False. You do not watch Star Trek. Good day sir.

>Malmivuo, Jaakko; Robert Plonsey (1994). Bioelectromagnetism : principles and applications of bioelectric and biomagnetic fields. New York: Oxford University Press. ISBN 978-0195058239.

Bio-electricity isn't real.

>Food replicators, universal translators, tablet computers, tricorders, holodecks, communicator badges, tractor beams, phasers and hypsprays have all been developed.

Use google: inventions, Star Trek

>Atleast in Star Trek alien cultures all have differences and histories explained in the show.

In Star Wars either your a human or you just make weird noises. No politics or culture is explored.

>All I remember is extreme moral pretentiousness

It's fine if you didn't watch Star Trek but don't just make generalizations. Star Wars is full Saturday morning cartoon mode with the good vs evil wizards crap...which is fine but don't pretend their is anything intellectual about it.

>Star Wars have some serious raging autists

Atleast you're autistic enough to know you're autistic.
>>
>>63616813
theyre the same shit now that fucking JJ and Kurtzman and Orci ruined it all

shit writers, buncha fucking hacks
>>
>>63619124
>Bio-electricity isn't real.
Not in the way it's portrayed in the show. The real life phenomenon is simply a reference to chemical reactions by ions in biological organisms. Psionics and telepathy do not exist and will never exist.

>Food replicators, holodecks, phasers, tractor beams have been developed
Are you fucking serious? None of these things exist.

>communicator badges
Trek did not invent portable communication devices. These were just a variant of walkie-talkies.

>hyposprays and tablet computers
points conceded
