I honestly hate Mike and Jay so fucking much for this video. I mean them hating Boyhood is fine, but the 12 years to make meme is the fucking worst film meme ever, it's not even a criticism it's just saying something about the film.
Saying "DID YOU KNOW THAT CITIZEN KANE USES DEEP FOCUS" isn't a criticism of Citizen Kane and it doesn't somehow immediately top any argument in it's favour. Like Boyhood used a really unique device in an interesting way and that somehow becomes an inherent negative whenever it comes up on tv. One of the things that makes it great is that it took 12 years to make, that's not a fucking flaw.

It really wasn't though. It lacked any kind of melodrama that you usually get from movies like this and basically just showed you 12 years of a few characters living fairly normally which is where the 'gimmick' comes in.
Anyway, they did that 12 years thing in their review which was fine. Then they did it again in another video which was already getting annoying and then they just kept doing it. We get it, you don't like the movie. Move on.

Of course it is. The effect you get from watching people actually grow up on the screen as opposed to 5 different actors pretending to be the same person is tremendous.
The Before trilogy for example work so well because they show you these two characters at three different stages in their lives.
Before Midnight would have been a lot worse if it was completely different actors suddenly. So yes, it does matter.
