Unfortunately, the power of taxation is abused in pretty much every first world nation so it is really no different than theft, and socialists essentially want to turn taxation into a neo-serfdom (which is what Hollande tried in France only to have it fail predictably).
In an ideal society taxation would be used to support the military, the judicial system, and emergency services, because these are things which are necessary for a civilized society to be maintained and therefore benefit everyone equally just by existing.
