Or was that the intention of the filmmakers - to leave it up to interpretation and in doing so, making a comment on criminal identity? Considering all the criminals wear masks, as criminals are known to do, and whose identities are unkown to the audience until revealed through dialogue.

It's very interesting how they refer to each other on a first name basis even though they all wear masks. Ties in perfectly with Nolan's themes of masks and identity.
Also apparently they're all friends but betrayed each other in the end. Is this why in TDKR CIA was so wary about people bringing "friends"?
