This is actually a carryover from the old days of hand projection and manually played music and soundtracks. At the end of the film, it was common sense to applaud the people presenting it to you - and back then when films were brand, BRAND new the director and actors would usually be in the theater so they would bow at the end of the showing.
It just kinda continued out of respect for the projectionist and now it's just a social meme like holding the door open for women.
There's actual history behind it, but now it's just brainless herd mentality with people not knowing the reason why. It's been like that since around the 60s.
