There is absolutely no proof of that ever happening. The movie is told from a skewed, biased perspective, and if the Empire really did have the capability to destroy an entire fucking planet, they'd do it to every single Rebel planet instead of just Alderaan.

The empire tried to blow up the planet where the rebel base was in episode IV. They death star blew up at the last minute before they could do it.
The empire then began building a 2nd death star, which was destroyed again by the Rebels in RotJ. They could have blown up other planets that the movie doesn't mention, but they certainly tried to use it on the rebels.
