I 've got a question about the holodeck programming. On a few occasions the holodeck malfunctions and the villain of the program becomes a bit more clever and dangerous because of the safety protocalls being offline. On one occasion in particular they became aware they were on a starship and wanted to leave. And that kind of says to me they had some level of curiosity and desire which leads to the question of AI.
Is it the processing power of the ships computer or the complexity of holodeck program routine that's most responsible for that understanding of whats going on around them and the ability to adapt and create new goals? What about the Doctor on Voyager? Are Data and Lore really that special as far as programming, growth, and feeling goes or was it Soongs ability to create a computer with the processing power needed on such a small (human sized) scale that was the actual achievement?
