I love the story with Jim Carrey and the makeup for being The Grinch. He talked about it in an interview with Graham Norton: at the beginning it took 8 hours to get him into makeup, and the dude was starting to go nuts not only because of how long that took but just getting that way was like "being buried alive."
The production staff hired someone from the CIA who trained agents extensively in methods on how to endure torture. And that's how he learned to deal with that shit. 8 hours to apply the full getup, and he did it over 100 times.
