Seriously, as good he is an illustrator and as cool his vehicle designs are, Mastumoto is terrible writer. Try to read Captain Harlock or Galaxy Express one of these days. It really didn't age well. He does some very interesting worldbuilding and background creation, but he has no idea how to write a story, only how to make some small scenes and put them one after another with little to no continuity. A l ot of his work not only explores the same thematics, but it does it the exact same way.that said, Space Battleship Yamato is fucking top-tier, thanks to him working with some actual writers

Why draw any other face when you've found one that's objectively perfect? Leiji Matsumoto's the man.
I don't see how you can have strong beef with his writing. It's simple but I feel like his work is targeted towards kids to a significant extent. And considering that, I think he still manages to get some reasonably powerful stuff across while still remaining incredibly accessible. And yes, his designs and illustrations are amazing. I'd actually say that his visuals are so great that on their own they make his stuff worth looking at, even if you don't care for his storytelling.
And I also think that Anno cops it a bit too hard. EVA gets praised as the greatest thing ever by people who don't really know better but that's not his fault and it really is incredibly directed for a tv series even though I prefer Space Runaway Ideon. EVA looks great, is stylish as hell and takes tv in directions that most people would never have seen before. And there's more to his reputation than the mindblow-factor of EVA. Gunbuster is probably one of the greatest OVA's to come out of the 80's and Wings of Honneamise still looks great today. I'm looking forward to his take on Godzilla.

It's impressive how much it falls on its face towards the end.
You have the whole thing building up slowly to some events, but the final moments have nothing happening. At all.
It's just bad pacing and writing and it's especially hard to cope with because everything else he does, he does really well. His designs are excellent, the visuals of his works are always top-notch, he made some of the best graphical renditions of space there is, when he wants to make some emotional moments he can get it done, but he just couldn't make things move towards a specific direction.
Due to this, the stories end up feling disjointed, like small fragments rather than a larger whole. In too many cases, a chapter starts right in the middle of something, with no explanation, introduction, or any tie to what previously happened. And once it is done, none of the events will seem to have any impact. You are always left in an unprecise setting that expects you to understand despite being given no understanding of the situation. and the odd thing is that it only happens on the small scale. The worlds and large events are clear, it's the things that you are shown that do not tie to anything.
I like a lot of what he does. I want to love it, but I just can't. he kept making the same mistakes over and over and that was always to the detriment of the stories.
I don't watch a lot of anime but I watched this card game anime last year that was really good, where it was kind of like magic the gathering but with a bunch of monkey's paw shit

I think that the problem is that there's such a thing as "anime voice acting." What I mean by that is that voice actors seem to go for a certain direction when they're working in anime rather than just trying to sound like people. I feel like often it's not "how would *person* say this" but instead "how would *anime person* say this?"
A lot of my favourite anime dubs are considered rough and shitty by a lot of people but I think that a good anime dub shouldn't sound like an anime dub. I particularly like the Manga UK dubs from the 90's where they didn't give a fuck and added loads of profanity to everything to bump the rating up and gain controversy and attention. I think that this also had the unintentional side-effect of allowing the voice actors to give more natural performances because of all the slang, one-liners and swearing.
