The moon landing happened. However the footage we were shown on TV is Kubrick's movie.
When Americans landed on the moon they were told by its inhabitants not to return. That's why Apollo 13 was sabotaged and why we've never attempted to go back. We left our flag on its surface though but the moon itself is hollow.
