Is James Bond just fiction /tv/ or do governments actually utilise suave, expertly-trained in all forms of combat, multilingual agents in the field?
I can't imagine agents in real life staying in 5* accommodation or driving amazing cars but surely Bond has some basis in reality.
My friend was recruited by MI6 incidentally, but he can't tell me much for obvious reasons.

Peter Wright reveals the details in 'Spycatcher' but he isn't exactly an entertaining writer. He routinely just derails into describing some random devices that he designed.

Spys don't really kill people they just get information and leave if it's getting too hot. If you need a hit on someone than you hire some professional top of the line spec ops guy to take a sniper shot from a mile away.

They're typically good looking, suave people who infiltrate government/military organizations in a more mundane way (i.e. apply and go work there, etc.)
Sometimes they'll use things like sex or some flash to obtain information if they think it would be beneficial. Overall though, they're spening the VAST majority of their time taking notes, writing reports, etc.
There aren't really shootouts, they want to remain concealed. They are more about infiltration of society and the infiltration of social circles for the purpose of obtaining useful information.

but as for your general question, whenever someone says they "can't talk about it" that just means they're a peon who does fuck all. i was a security guard in the navy and even they told us we weren't supposed to talk about what we had done and they even gave us security clearance. james bond probably wears a suit because back in the day everyone did. modern spies probably just want to blend in, and most of the espionage is probably done electronically anyway

they definitely have trained infiltrators, but it's mostly something lame like getting a job in another countries embassy and usually they "handle assets" aka bribe local people to do a lot of the intel gathering work, they don't do any combat themselves and are not going to be driving around in an astin martin since they'll stick out like a sore thumb

Nope. MI5 had a recruitment campaign where they said how wrong the image of an agent is in James Bond and that they want smart agents capable of working in a team and adept at problem solving. They also want average looking people to act as field agents too. I also think they emphasised that most work is desk work/looking over reports and definetly not killing people and shit. They do utilize charismatic social people as spies. Being a real life spy involves a lot more talking and flirting and a lot less fighting and shooting than the movies would suggest. Sociopaths make the best spies, they know how to manipulate people and not feel remorse about what would happen to that person if they were caught divulging info they shouldn't by their country.
So the ideal spy is a charming sociopath.. like Bond.
