Mad Max 2 was the meme Mad Max before Fury Road. And George Miller has changed so much over his career that he's really not the same director he was when he made the original.

The first Mad Max was shot in rural Victoria with a $200 000 budget and formal permission to use anything. Fury Road is a circus show on wheels filmed in Africa with a different lead, setting and tone. I like all of the Mad Max movies but they're very different.

I don't get where the whole "muh feminist" angle comes from.

Sure, furiosa herself is a bit of a badass, but ultimately every other woman is barely competent, and Furiosa's grand plan would have been twarted when she got shot/stabbed/starved to death/killed in all sorts of other ways, were it not for the actions of the male lead.

It's superficially a "feminist" movie, but when you examine it with same the attention to detail that Miller so obviously has, it much more clearly becomes another tale of mad max saving the day.

And in that sense, it's no different from 2 and Beyond Thunderdome, which also have superficially badass female characters who ultimately end up as damsels in distress for Mel Gibson to save anyways.

It's subtle, but Miller comes off as pretty fucking based once you pick up on it.

I saw it like 4 times in theaters, and by the 4th watch, it was pretty clear to me that Immortan Joe is meant to be a sympathetic character.

People say its just a rehash of Road Warrior, but unlike Humungus, IJ isn't just some marauding 100% evil baddie the way Humungus or the Toecutter were. Seeing Fury Road a few times over kind of drives home that he's much more of a "shades of gray" character like Auntie Entity was.

He's pretty clearly meant to be someone who did what he felt needed to be done to carve out a tiny slice of something approaching civilization in the wastelands. He's old enough to remember the good times, and his breeding program is the desperate attempt of someone who knows his time is near to keep an un-mutated bloodline alive to inherit the world that he fought so hard to build.

It's little details like the sadness on his face after seeing his dead unborn Heir, or the fact that the film establishes that despite the religion he concocted to hold his civilization together, he's personally a Buddhist, who in that last scene before the final chase is pretty clearly trying to atone for all of the things he knows he's done wrong.

TL:DR, by the 4th watch in the cinemas, I felt the saddest for Immortan Joe in the end.

>Lord "Just Walk Away" Humongous

Too bad they prefaced that ultimatum with a scene of his lackeys having a little in-out, in-out with the escaping search party.

I thought it was kind of assumed, senpai, that he was going to do the same to them if they left willingly as well. Also, walking away meant certain death.

Meanwhile Immortan Joe keeps his incredible machines running with no spare parts, gives meaning to the loves of orphaned mutants, and is an extremely accomplished horticulturist, with a real appreciation for the knowledge and trappings of the civilization that he'd lost.

He's a lot like Captain Nemo, IMHO, an imperfect leader, born of shitty circumstances, who has done both incredible things and incredibly awful things in the name of maintaining the world he build for himself and his men.

Fury Road is overall the best sequel, while road warrior is still a cult.

I doubt it'll lead to a Best Picture nomination at the Oscars. It might but I don't really see it happening. The Globes are not a very accurate predictor of the direction the Oscars will take. It's nice to see it getting its deserved acclaim though. It's rare any good movies are nominated at these shit ceremonies so it's always a welcome change when one like Fury Road gets a nom.

> Naive slave women form an even more naive narrative of the world from their situation and have to quickly stuff it as they quickly realize how dependent they are.

Again it's like there is an entire group of people watching films wrong.
>>
>>63512019
I just think that Fury Road is not all that great.

I watched it again a second time and i wasn't as impressed by it.

Hopefully Star Wars will have better characters and a better story. Also i believe JJ is actually the right person to make Star Wars, despite his previous movies not being all that great.
>>
>>63512059

the entire first half of the film features the male protagonist wearing what amounts to a gag preventing him from using his voice. I dunno if you know this but that's a pretty big symbol for stripping the male of his ability to maintain authority. also how is it that you think a woman with a shaved head and older women are people who are acting like men?

>>63512143

I can't imagine this is genuine. It seems like you either have no idea how to interpret art or you're just having a laugh.
>>
>>63512144

yeah I just think that Star Wars pretty much looks like a retread of all the other movies. I'm sure it'll be fine but I don't think JJ has nearly the grasp on the technical aspects of filmmaking that Miller demonstrates in Fury Road. Fury Road has a completely distinctive, gorgeous visual aesthetic and the quality of its technical attributes is still impressive to me. Star Wars will probably have more of a focus on character/plot but I'm imagining that it'll be similar to Jurassic World in its attempts to remind the audience frequently of the movies they loved when they were growing up.
>>
>>63512144
>Hopefully Star Wars will have better characters and a better story

Really.

Does anyone actually care about the SW story anymore?

Just turn your brain off for 2 hours of spastic special effects and enjoy.
>>
>>63512469
Having a decent story is one of the essential ingredients that made Star Wars so popular. Why would anyone not hope for a good story in the continuation?

I think you meant "does anyone EXPECT a good SW story anymore?", to which I'd say no. Expectations are pretty low.

Yes if we continue with your symbolism, Mad Max get rid of his mask when the women and him finally find a truce and become allies.

Nux and him are the only charachters to evolve along the story and they're the ones that are in control most of the time. Without them Furiosa would have killed a thousand time and she saved them in some occasions too.

The only "feminist" thing that really bothers me is that there are no female antagonists.
It would have been great to see some group called the war girls working alongside the war boys.
They could have been the ones getting up on the perchs to throw bombs on the rig for instances.
The movie would feel way less pro-women abd more realistic.
>>
>>63505657
>rewatch it
>its shit
whyyyy the fuck did i rewatch it, why do i keep doing it
none of those old movies ever live up to my memories of them, never

watching mad max was almost as painful as rewatching dawn of the dead
>>
>>63504832
I loved the movie, but I hate the tumblr girl fanbase that's latched on to it because the media claimed Furiosa to be some feminist icon
>>
>>63513975
That shit lasted all of a week. Women don't actually like action movies unless they involve superheroes
>>
>>63513782

again, the movie's perspective is one that believes women exist within a patriarchal society that is a place that is easier for men to inhabit than women.

this is a view that is held by many people and there's nothing wrong with someone holding this view if they have reasons and solid arguments backing up their beliefs.

are you suggesting that no work of art should offer a perspective on the world that differs from your own? because that is extremely close-minded and frankly just pretty stupid.
>>
>>63511119
Underrated post.

This is symptomatic of the shift in the medium we're seeing. As digital availability and quality of affordable home cinema equipment increase, the focus of capital will shift away from the confined feature length movie format.

In ten years, novels and thicker literary works will normatively NOT be adapted into a riskily strict 2 hour compression. Movies will be exclusively original format-specific narratives, or adaptations of shorter works like the novella.

We'll never look back.
>>
>>63514457

but there were a number of masterpieces produced this year in film just like every other year. just because Hollywood has followed its poisonous progression towards an industry that only has time for movies that will gross billions doesn't mean that the medium itself is going to suffer. you guys just don't understand that because you only look to Hollywood as a place for movies and don't understand that great movies have been released this year outside its confines.
>>
>>63514390
Well I didn't suggest anything.
Just saying that I saw a different meaning to the movie. And I think neither are wrong.
My initial point if view is that the movie shows that the feminist "fight" can't be won without the help of men. Basically that cooperation is necessary and that the extremist "kill all men" feminist are retarded, shown by the evolution of furiosa along the story and her relation and growing camaraderie with Max.

There's not only one way to dissect the movie. You can see it as a hardcore pro feminist movie oras a moderate vision of equality and cooperation between men or women.
>>
>>63514543
How on earth did you read my post? The medium will do the opposite of suffer. The medium will have LESS CAPITAL, but the content produced in it will be narratively and dramaturgically MORE SUITED. What will most likely happen to hollywood - which you insist on dragging into this - is that it will look more lile world cinema.

I haven't watched the originals, but what the fuck was with the constant Benny Hill fight scenes? Was it really fucking necessary for everything action part to be sped up? It looked gay as fuck.

Or were those type of scenes in the Gibson ones? It made me hate the movie. That and Tom Hardy could have just spoke in an Aussie accent like he did at the start, throughout.

Benny Hill scenes and Hardys voice made this movie shit.

Speaking as someone who has been exposed to a fair amount of feminist rhetoric, the fact that Max is bound and gagged by the patriarchal gang could symbolize the idea in feminist thought that men suffer from chauvinism as well as women. This is because they are forced to do unpleasant things to prove their masculinity and are abused and exploited when they find themselves at the bottom of the hierarchy. This is also the theme of the warboy who converts to their side after one of the women shows him kindness.
>>
>>63505708

Who was that guy anyway?
>>
>>63511542
I had no problem with the movie until the old women came in and started picking off everyone with goddamn muskets and beating the War boys 1v1

At least Furiosa and a few of the breeder girls were believable in that they were shown to make up for their physical weaknesses with intelligence and teamwork

Then the old ladies come in and start physically dominating what are essentially roided out meth heads with chainsaws
>>
>>63516894

That's one of the things that held this movie back, all the cheesy tricks and weird camera work, like the speeding up and various other things, really took away from the quality for me.

It seems to be that Miller consulting Eve Ensler is being held as proof of his positive intent, and so that means that we don't have to think about the movie. or if we do we just confirming what we already believe. But what if Ensler didn't provide the best advice? What if she did but Miller misinterpreted it?

YOU KNOW WHAT would be real funny? if the director were to get on this thread, and read all the snide comments by the 20 year olds who think they could ever do a better film. FILM. than him, when their "skills" and "talent" are making webms at best, and shitposting about some 30 year old ecuadorian movie only five people have ever seen as if that means they have taste at worst.
funny.

>>63524154
Fury Road is 'just a movie'. It's not any different from hundreds of other movies. Like, people are overjoyed to notice that actors in the scene are doing things, and so-on - when the reality is, of course, that this is true in any movie. Fury Road is not better than, say, Battletruck.

But the healthy response to this fact is not the lame conclusion that all these movies are equally bad, but the realization that all these movies have always been good.

I didn't mind the Benny Hill shit. I liked the attempt at going lighter with Mad Max. Turning the whole thing into a giant murder-circus on wheels was a much better idea than having Max take care of a bunch of crazy kids for half a movie.

It's not like the original but I think it was a smart idea not to try to. If they tried to emulate Mad Max they'd probably end up with a shitty copy, taking the general premise and setting and going nuts with it was fun.
