It's a bit different when their race is relevant (ie James Bond, can't have the epitome of traditional Britain not be ethnically British) or they have an established look in the larger media already (ie superman).
Elba can't play Roland. The role requires Roland to be white so Odetta Holmes can mistrust him due to the fact of him being white. Without that dicotomy the series can't highlight how hate+racism is a monster in human form as the book did brilliantly.
