This is a fair point, and I think it also applies the other way around; men generally do need to be attractive or have an interesting look in some way. Uggos will always have roles in either gender because scripts often call for uggos, but generally looking good is a must.
This is not a new issue at all, and it's always been understood that audiences generally don't want to see ugly or even average people on the screen; if they're going to pay to be transported into a silver screen of big ideas, they want the people to look nice.
