This poster they use for it on Netflix looks like total dogshit, but I really fucking enjoyed it, and it was nothing like what the advertisement made it out to be.

Looks like it should be some Hallmark/LifeTime original, but it's a nice little 'family drama' movie.

>>

I heard it was a pretty hollow entry into the mumblecore canon, going through the motions of its MO and generally being interchangeable from about ten other movies.

This what I've heard and read, not my own thoughts. That said, it looks like something I will not be watching any time soon after getting through the god-awful Uncle Kent.
>>
>>63482172
it's called ACTING...
>>
>>63482175
I actually liked Lena Dunham in it.
Certainly within a close range of acting, but she's not Hannah and that's nice to see, since everything else she does is basically just Hannah.

>Joe Swanberg
Of course it's going to be a good movie dingus.
>>
>Happy
It's merry, goddammit.
>>
>>63482178
With the volume of films Joe swanberg makes most of them are bound to be pretty bland.
>>
>>63482178
well the biggest event in the whole film is when she accidentally burns a pizza. That's practically an action scene compared to everything else in the mumblecore canon. It's not bad at all, in fact it's probably in my Top 5 Swabergs.

Uncle Kent was pretty bad. There's actually a sequel to that for some reason.

I'm gonna watch Drinking Buddies, but is there anything else I should add to the list?
>>
>>63482118
Doess Anna get lezzed in this movie? Not watching it otherwise
>>
>>63482118
looks comfy desu
>>
>>63482893
Definitely. Drinking Buddies is my favorite modern-era Swanberg. It's less mumblecore and more Cassavetes. It's just people hanging out, drinking beer, getting in arguments and falling (gradually) in love. It's great.

you want recommendations in terms of Swanberg or just mumblecore in general? Swanberg's output alone is really interesting but only 50% of them really work.
>>
>>63483079
Was thinking more mumblecore in general, but I'll for sure earmark that director
>>
>>63483118
try Andrew Bujalski. His first film invented the genre. And Aaron Katz.

Bujalski's Funny Ha Ha (2002) is one of the best American independent films since Cassavetes imho. He's like an American Rohmer. It's super quiet and virtually nothing happens so it might test your patience. but the lead is super cute.

Aaron Katz is great in a similar fashion but stylistically he's more like Sophia Coppola. Quiet City is his best. it's just two people wandering around the city gradually falling in love.

there's many more...

This. How did they fuck it up so badly?
>>
I love mumblecore. Drinking Buddies is one of my favorite films to watch anytime, extremely nice to sit down with a beer and have it in the background.

Happy Christmas was interesting because like with a lot of films in the genre (though Happy Christmas is an extreme case) the characters rarely have any sort of arc. They just continue to exist in the same way, which feels realistic, but not bleak.
>>
The weird digitally inserted film grain was my biggest problem with this film.
>>

Oh no, this is me with women.
Oh no. Oh god.

that's the real deal anon. independent filmmakers don't have time to fake that shit.

that guy is also the director desu

he's a film geek who worked at a video store and decided to make movies, like tarantino. then he invented mumblecore.

there's hope for us all.
>>
>>63485715
Did they use film that was left in a swamp for 30 years or something? It doesn't look like real film grain at all, it looks like fucking shit. Like rather than have the imperfections of film, they did something to intentionally make it look worse and distracting. They're actually making an argument for digital.
>>

Did he go to film school?

Give me a quick rundown on entry level Swanberg other than Drinking Buddies and HC. and VHS.

I guess you're not too familiar with film formats? that's what 16mm looks like. can't remember if it was super 16 or just 16, but 16 is roughly half the quality of 35mm, which was the hollywood standard back when they used film.

it was made as an affordable stock for home video cameras like the Bolex which was popular in the 50s and 60s. It's cheaper than 35mm film and faster to develop.

if you want to see more 16mm films check out Moonrise Kingdom or Carol. The grain/color has its own quality.
>>
>>63486018
Moonrise Kingdom actually looks good, though.

I think he did a year or two. that's where he learned to edit films on vintage equipment. Funny Ha Ha was filmed in 16mm and he edited and developed the film himself.

Check out Computer Chess (2013). He shot that on a fucking ancient magnetotape camera and it looks phenomenal. It's unlike anything you'll ever see and it gets weirder and weirder as it goes on.
>>
>>63482118
Pretty by the books "mumblecore." That being said, I enjoyed it and Anna Kendrick was pretty fine in it.

Not as good as Drinking Buddies, though.

funnily enough that DID use digitally enhanced grain, but even the 16mm shots were grainy af. get the bluray.

oh that explains it. Moonrise was shot in Super 16mm which is bigger than regular 16mm. Explains why the quality is (slightly) better.

Hannah Takes the Stairs was his breakthrough thanks to SXSW and it brought Greta Gerwig to the world. Andrew Bujalski is one of the main characters in it too. Unfortunately I wouldn't call it essential viewing, unless you wanna see how great Greta was even that early in her career. I'm a Greta fanboy so I dig it.

He did a couple of minor works after that then got pretty experimental, and started making films just for himself and his circle of friends, kind of as an exercise in craft. He made like 7 in 2011 and 5 in 2012, all varying in quality. He goes meta in a lot of them (making films about himself making films etc). Hardly any of them are worth watching out of anything other than curiosity, so you've pretty much caught him at the best time w/ Drinking Buddies and HC.

Try Nights and Weekends anyway, that's pretty interesting.

opening day. I DID say I was a Greta fanboy... It's basically a Peter Bogdonavich film if you're familiar with him.
