This one episode they barely made it back alive. They organised a plan to go back and fight. They were explicitely planning a military operation. Also the Genii operate almost exclusively at close quarters and rely on overwhelming force which makes the weapon almost ideal. 5: As a lever action it is probable that the top two things that look like rifle barrels are exactly that, twin rifle barrels.
To make logical sense the weapon is a twin barreled lever action carbine firing two rounds roughly equal to a 30-30 with the ammo stored in twin tube magazines in the stock with three linked 12 gauge equivalent shotguns with 10-12 inch barrels under the twin rifle component.
So it isn't a triple barrel shotgun, it is a double barreled lever action carbine with a triple barreled sawed off shotgun attached to it.

Once Universe broke away from the "malfunction of the week" formula and stopped visiting fucking Earth so much it started getting really fucking good.
Like I would say probably 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the episodes after "Life" in Season 1 were really pretty damn good.
Plus it ends on such a perfect cliffhanger - we don't know the fate of Earth, we don't know what will happen with Destiny, what will happen with Eli, the crew, the mission.

The youth romance really brought it down, but i think they wanted to establish they're prtty much with each other for the rest of their lives (or else there's no show, they go home, the end) so connections would pay off big time later. They put a bit of that into the alternate civilization epilogue one, but it would have been worth it if they'd have continued exploring new galaxies, bringing new areas of destiny online, and making it a home.
there was a reasonably good season 3 script that concludes the series floating around online, its ok.
