But what if you get a good episode, like the Doctor dances, blink or heaven sent? You get a masterful piece of fiction that goes down in the annals of history, and stays as a golden beacon for the rest of time.
Now tell me, who can even give me the description of the lazurus experiment? Huh? That's right, it didn't fucking exist, with Moffat the stakes are higher, you either get BTFO or GOAT and that is the essence of good drama.

My theory is that it still is in the pocket universe, only near the end of the universe things start to break down and Gallifrey is accessible then. The Time Lords are being cautious with a full return to their proper place in time because it would probably start a new Time War. They don't want to rush into things without being prepared. This is why the want the Hybrid, if it's as powerful as they predict it could potentially be used against the Daleks should they try to fight again.

There are, but TARDIS's are sort of synced so unless they intentionally land where they know another Time Lord is from another time they will generally only meet up with people chronologically close.

Midnight's pretty damn great, and series 4 is probably my favorite Tennant series. Donna and Ten had a pretty damn great chemistry that made even some of the weaker episodes watchable, and you also got Turn Left which was a pretty unexpected gem. Series 5 just happens to be my favorite in general.

The entire episode falls apart if you think about it in retrospect. It's filled with characters that are genuinely distraught with the act of capturing the whale, but reluctantly do it because they think there is no other way.
But then there is all this fucked up shit going on that makes no sense. Who decided to feed people to the whale? Who decided to murder people for voting and children for getting bad grades? Who decided to write and record a creepy poem to scare the children they are about to murder? Who designed smilers to scare the citizens?

The Doctor Dances and Blink are great stories, but they are more or less on par eith RTD's best, like Midnight or The Waters of Mars.
Heaven Sent was a 10/10 episode, but imo the only one in the last three seasons.
That's the main thing I don't like in the recent seasons, the quantity of GOAT episodes has gone way down. Maybe it's just me expecting too much, but while Moffat on occasion still delivers a Listen, a Dark Water or a Heaven Sent, the guest writers haven't been as good as they were before. Give me a series from 1 to 6 and I'll give you at least three great episodes that weren't written by the showrunner.
The recent series weren't bad on average, especially S8, but each has only had one writer who could deliver a great episode (Cross in S7, Mathieson in S8, Dollard in S9), and that's about it. I want another Family of Blood or God Complex-tier episode by a guest writer, goddamnit.

It's not just RTD, it genuinely looked like Moffat could keep it up in his first two series.
S6 had a shit arc, but it was saved by Neil Gaiman, Tom MacRae and Toby Withouse giving us some of the best episodes of the Smith era.
Capaldi is a great actor, but the writers need to up their game. Otherwise, I dread the state the show will be in once Moffat leaves.

I agree for the most part. Silly fun romp episodes are always good for christmas specials, but there is potential for the fun romp to fall flat (see Wardrobe) or for a more serious and traditional who episode to work perfectly well (see Last Christmas)
