I really liked part 1. Part 2 much like volumes 3 & 4 of TDKR were a bit silly, but I still enjoyed them.
Also that showdown with the Mutant's leader was brutal.

Same goes for The Killing Joke. Although The Dark Knight Returns was set in the future so Frank Miller could go full edgy, whereas Alan Moore probably knew they'd play his ending out as ambiguous and "it didn't really happen".
