The Sith competed among themselves for power, and were so powerful they almost destroyed the galaxy in the process. In order to preserve their teachings without destroying the galaxy, one of the last surviving Sith - Darth Bane - decided to make it so that he would only pass on his teachings to one student, who would eventually become master, who would eventually take his own solitary student, etc. etc. That way the teachings of the Sith would survive without jeopardizing the galaxy. Eventually the Sith would succeed in achieving unlimited power. The creation of an all-powerful ubermensch is the goal of the Sith.
